Dick G
It really irritates me when landowners put up no trespassing signs at the river's edge and then dump stuff into a public river. I saw this the other day on a kayak outing

Eric
The people that live along the river are often times the ones that abuse it the worst.
Guest rich mc
it is very possible that permits are required for that concrete, and the tire is pollution rich mc
mikea
I know this spot, right by redneck point with the tire swing. I've taken photos and shown some people, nothing ever came of it. This farmer/land owner is charging people to dump on his land next to a public waterway, I don't get it. Home owners do the same crap with lawn clippings and anything else there lazy asses dont feel like hauling to the curb.
Eric
I have to admit, I chuckled at "redneck point." Totally agree with your post Mike.
Terry Dodge
I called the IEPA last year (2013) on a property owner doing the same thing on a creek I frequent. During this 2014 year when I returned to the area it was cleaned up. Get an address if you can and report it to the IEPA.

Scott Ferguson
That picture that was posted is "Farmer Fritz's" place. He got away with nothing. That concrete was put there many years ago to stop the erosion and the EPA was on him about it. I don't know what, if any fines he paid. mikea
Scott I've witnessed more than once while fishing past this spot a full sized dump unloading concrete on the bank, so as of this summer season it is definitely still going on. Rob G
Does anyone know that if you dump concrete in a smaller stream, will it increase significantly the alkalinity of the water downstream?

CBS Channel 2 did an investigative report about this very spot. The report aired tonight around 10:15 PM. Here is the article with video: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/11/20/2-investigators-illegal-dump-thrived-for-years-along-dupage-river/
ronk
Other than being unsightly I doubt the concrete is in any way harmful to the river, And it does act as a stabilizer to the Dupe's badly eroded banks.Unless there were actual pollutants also being dumped into the river which is doubtful much more harm routinely comes to the river from phosphates etc.I'd be more angered by the Plainfield Park District's stripping away the vegetation along the river's banks(which hopefully will no longer happen) and P'field's use of the river as a dumping ground for massive amounts of lawn clippjings from a field I observed a few yrs ago. Scott Ferguson
Jim J and I once had deal with Herman Fritz. We'd leave $5 in a mailbox, and we could park on his land, right next to the river. He even gave us tomatoes out of his garden. He's told us about the EPA giving him a hard time about adding concrete to the river bank. According to the TV report, he's taking money for dumping garbage and covering the garbage up with more concrete chunks. I floated that stretch not too long ago and did not think there was much more of the concrete than was there 10 years ago. I obviously couldn't see all that had been added. Bart Durham
While it was difficult to understand Mr. Fritz, he seemed apologetic in the clip. Perhaps it was taken after receiving papers from the Will County States Attorney, who the broadcaster indicated has filed charges against Mr. Fritz. Hopefully this will put a stop to the dumping. ronk
i believe the Fritz family are one of P'field's earliest settlers. He still has a sizeable farm here and unlike other farmers in the area he's resisted the get rich quick offers of developers. If he's heavily fined sadly he's likely to sell too. Mike Clifford
Have any of you boated the Calumet River? The factories along the stretch near Lake Calumet dump anything and everything into it. The banks have indescribable stuff slipping and sliding right into the water. The smallmouth fishing is quite good, remarkably. I was astonished the first time I saw this industrial pollution happening so blatantly in a major city. The powers that be just laugh it off.You learn to fish the stuff like "structure". There's a smallie behind every broken bag of rock salt or half-skid of Quickrete that slid down the hill. Eric
The powers that be will have a field day with this one, and the agencies that knew about it and did nothing will have a fire lit under their asses to get on board. They'll dig deep here, and old Herman will be pressed to name names. Why? Once the media bites down and your reputation is on the line, things get moving, and quickly. This is just one example of the many instances of abuse along our waterways. I'll bet just about everyone on this site knows of somewhere on a river or creek that has a dump backing right up to the water. Kudos to the Plainfield resident for not giving up until this was brought to light. Now he'll have to endure the noise and sights of the excavation and investigation. It would be interesting to see a follow-up to this story.
mikea
I'm glad society's attitude regarding people abusing are waterways and public lands has changed. Years ago people would have shrugged there shoulders and turned a blind eye, not anymore.
Mark Lutz
Sadly the Fox in many many locations has the same issues, especially in a few towns. The locations that I am referring unfortunately I believe to be mainly rentals and some businesses. What a shame
Dick G
I am glad to see that this is finally being addressed. There are some spots on Big Rock Creek near Plano that have similar looking stream banks. Years ago these spots were photographed and reported, but I don't believe anything has been done about it. I guess it has to get on tv to get a response.
Mike Clifford
Has PRN gotten involved in this yet? This is right up their alley. Thanks for the update, Eric!
Dick G
There are some ISA officers who have fished this area in the past and have had some access agreements with the farmer perp; I think they should contact him and tell him enough is enough! I have a place downstate and I run into this redneck attitude frequently. I am treated as a trespassing "Yankee," and yet some of them dump appliances down the river banks and race up and down the riverbed in their ATVs. GRRRRRR!
