I don't take a lot of quick trips. I take a lot of long trips, as in 6 to 12 hours, and I rarely get out of the boat..That would be a lot of time if you aren't comfortable. I'm thinking about a new boat myself, and it will have a seat that sits up higher. Not only for comfort, but also to stay drier. My current boat is a SOT, but the seat doesn't raise up. Swamp-ass on a ten hour float really sucks, especially at the end of a cool fall trip. If you plan on a lot of short spur-of-the-moment trips after work, a light sit-in might be ideal, but that boat might not be suitable for long trips or camping. I guess the bottom line is: there are no perfect options.

At some point during our Door County trip a few years ago, we were talking about birds of prey. I brought up the fact that in Mongolia, they hunt wolves with Golden Eagles. Ron flat out shot me down. No way. Don't be stupid. Ridiculous. We went back and forth for a good chunk of the day. He refused to buy it. Finally we get back to the hotel and I pull up a video of eagles hunting wolves. Ron watched without a word. The video ended, and I said "Do you believe me now?" After a long pause he said, "Yeah, but those were really small wolves."

Damn. He was the original lovable curmudgeon. I'm glad I got a little time on the water with him.

Welcome back! As bad as you seemed to have been bitten by the smallie/moving water bug, I'm surprised you left for so long! Kids, school, and work can really interfere with a guys fishing. I'll throw out the Sylvania Wilderness area in the UP as a great option to get away from it all. It's five or six hours away, but it would be worth it. I'm sure some other ideas will get thrown out there.

Jon, I've been preaching the same thing for years. Color doesn't matter in topwaters. I throw topwater 90% of the time, and it's always a white Judebug. White so I can see it. Like you said, hold a fly up to the sky and tell me what color it is.
