That is odd. I haven't seen much Mayflies in my area of the Fox, but have seen a lot of Caddis though. I wonder if it was Caddis instead. The report didn't show a single picture of Mayflies taken in the area. The Mayflies picture shown was taken from somewhere else.
  2. Easy for me. Foxy Crawdad.....
  3. Found it. It was Manjo Minnow.
  4. Great actions and very life like. Reminded me of a plastic minnow lure in the 90's which had similar actions.
  5. Muskie on The Fly is a great book. Maybe I'll bring my copy for Mr Tomes to sign. What time will he be there?
  6. Thanks Ryan. I've been fishing Lake Geneva with Danny who fishes spinning rods with plastic worms and tubes. He's been outfished me 2 to 1. I've heard the same in fishing tournaments that the fly rod division 1st place: 15lbs and the all tackle division 1st place: 45lbs. I'm not a purist. Tradition is nice, but innovation is must. Rich - try some on your shannon streamer, if you haven't tried them already.
  7. Thanks Mike for the warning. Mike is right that the scent is extremely powerful. The markers are easier and less messy to use than the dip type. I tried them on craftfur, rabbit strip, and marabou last night. All worked well.
  8. Just picked one of these up at Cabela's today. Planning to use on my craftfur flies. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Spike-It-Scent-Markers/710953.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dscent%2Bmarker%26x%3D12%26y%3D5%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=scent+marker&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products They also made a dipping type. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Spike-It-Dip-N-Glo-Garlic-Lure-Dye/1606086.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dscent%2Bdip%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=scent+dip&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products Has one ever used them before?
  9. hats, jackets, pants, waders, fly lines, rod handles, rod guides.
  10. I've been using Daii Chi 2546 and Dai Riki 930 in size 4, 2, 1/0, and 2/0. These are stainless steel saltwater hooks. Most of the flies are not weighted, only a few are. These are very light and slow sinking flies. To get them deep, I've been using sinktip and fulll sink lines. I'd stuffed ear plug foam inside the head, but eventually they'd sink Initially, I coated the head with Loon's Hard Head Clear and used a rotating wheel to dry them. It took several days to finish a fly, because I had to coat them 3-4 times to get the thickness I wanted. Now, I'm doing CCG. I've not yet to try the Clouser style dumbbell eyes on these, but I had experimented with jig hooks (60 or 90 degrees). To make the fly rides hook-point-up, I stacked the lead wire on the back of the hook, this way: I also had substituted craftfur with marabou, and the result was as effective but not as durable. I've been using sink tip line (type 4) and full sink line (type 6) to get the fly down in 10-25 fow. Cast it out, count down, and strip. Rapid strips of 10"-15" work best. Strip, pause, strip-strip-strip, pause. Once I feel a bump, I strip faster until a feel a weight before lifting the rod tip.
  11. I've been testing these flies on Lake Geneva. The fly is an evolution of the Stick Minnow that I posted back in Dec of last year. So far, I'd caught smallmouth, largemouth, rockbass, pike, and perch with them. Hook: Gamakatsu SC-15 Size# 2 - 3/0 Thread: Ultra Thread 210 Red (for injury mark) or Mono Thread 0.006 (for no injury mark) Back: Chart, Yellow, Red, Brown, Blue, White, Purple, or Pink Craft Fur Belly: White Craft Fur Tail: 10 strands of Pearl Krystal Flash and Craft Fur (same color as the back) Lateral Lines: 6-10 strands of Flashabou Eyes: 3D Holographic eyes Size 4mm - 7mm iBait Rattle & Depth Charger This is the Rattle and Depth Charger version of the iBait. Both start out and finish similarly. The tying process of these versions is the same as the regular version. Just the hook and starting out are different. iBait Floating is coming...... The floating minnow version is coming.
  12. yep! With a few additions, it'd be a perfect fishingmobil. How about anker launcher and smoke bombs?
  13. With all the rains that we had, it's time to fish the lake with this.
  14. I have these 3 books in my library. http://www.amazon.com/Fly-Fishing-Smallmouth-Streams-Bob-Clouser/dp/0811701735/ref=pd_sim_b_3 http://www.amazon.com/Smallmouth-Fly-Fishing-Techniques-Destinations/dp/0976387603/ref=pd_cp_mov_0 http://www.amazon.com/Fly-Fishing-Techniques-Smallmouth-Harry-Murray/dp/1571883606/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372358653&sr=1-5&keywords=fly+fishing+for+smallmouth But if I can have one only, I'll go with Bob Clouser's book.
  15. The Fox River crawfish are mostly olive with tints of orange and red. I think that's why the Foxy Crawdad works so well, because it has all 3 color combo eventhough the fly does not look like the real crawfish at all. Here is the Foxy Crawdad again: http://illinoissmallmouthalliance.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=9891
  16. A good looking fly Ryan. Add some olive and it'll be a killer on the Fox.
  17. The knot tied in the vid was a Clinch Knot. The same technique can be used with the Non Slip Mono Loop Knot.
  18. Interesting and creative way to tye deerhairs (Tenkara style). Yes, show us the finished fly and let us know how it fish.
  19. Thanks Ron for the detailed annalysis. Although the article is about trout fishing, but it is essential that all river smallmouth chasers should also understand and utilize these techniques especially if you're after trophy smallies. Reading the water and good fly placement are some of the keys in catching bigger and older fish. I'm not an expert caster, but I'm practicing these techniques and trying to improve my game.
  20. "Fishing the Clock" by Rene Harrop. Found this article in the Midcurrent. It covers different techniques in fly fishing such as mending, different types of casts and etc. It is very informative. I thought it woudl benefit some of our members, since we had some dicussion on these very topics not long ago. http://midcurrent.com/techniques/fishing-the-clock/?utm_source=MidCurrent+Fly+Fishing+Email+Newsletter&utm_campaign=faa43e7d89-Newsletter_May_29_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8efbf3b958-faa43e7d89-18970037
  21. I would go with "C". If I want to work the same section, I'd come back in 2 hours (rest the pool as trout guys said) and fish slower with longer casts and with smaller fly the second time.
  22. Mark, Cabela's carries a few 90 degrees jig hooks. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gamakatsureg-90176-Heavy-Wire-Jig-Hooks/739114.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DJig%2Bhooks%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=Jig+hooks&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products http://www.cabelas.com/product/Eagle-Claw-570-Aberdeen-Jig-Hook-150-Per-100/702165.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DJig%2Bhooks%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=Jig+hooks&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products http://www.cabelas.com/product/Mustad-32756-Aberdeen-Jig-Hook-150-Bronze/702204.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DJig%2Bhooks%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=Jig+hooks&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products All these will work for the Meat Whistle.
  23. Nice Tye, Ryan. Keep the bucktails sparse. It'd be easier to cast with the 8wt.
