  1. Thanks Eric, Jim and Mike for sharing your own stories. Seeing these old lures does bring back old memories. Rich - On the other side of that 5th lure has the word "GARCIA" on it. Hope some one can identify it.
  2. Thanks Timothy. It really was a wonderful gift. Thanks Dan for the tip. I think I'll keep these in memory of Mr. Cloud. Good luck at the show. Thanks John. Some of our customers have become like a family. On the other of the spectrum, I've seen some customers since they were in their diapers and now they are bigger than me. Yes Rich, some of these old lures are pretty cool. I've never seen one until now.
  3. Thanks Carl for reminding us to clean the fly line. As I don't do it as often as I should also. To get rid of the memory of a new leader, I normally rig the rod with the new leader and a fly at least one night before fishing, keep the fly on the hook keeper of the rod and let the rod stretch the leader over nigh.
  4. Thanks everyone for being there and thanks John for hostig. It was a fun tying night. I hope the Foxy Crawdad will bring many big smallies to all. This is the place that I got those brass dumbell eyes for the fly (I hope it is OK the post the site). http://www.ebay.com/itm/25-BRASS-FLY-TYING-BARBELL-DUMBELL-EYES-3-16-BLACK-4-5mm-medium-/300850057003?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item460c0f8f2b
  5. Tom & Sue Cloud have been coming to our restaurant for over 10 years. We have be come quite good friends over the years, but only the last few years that I found out Tom used to fish a lot. So, we started talking about going fishing together, but we never did. Because by then, Tom was battling with Diabetes and Cancer. Tom passed away last year. A few days ago, Sue stoped by and gave me an old leather porch filled with old fishing lures. She said "Tom wanted you to have these." Thank you Mr. Tom Cloud.
  6. Cool Yak! Is he planning to put some Christmas lites on the yak (first picture on the ceiling)?
  7. Like your idea of using marabous as the tails for these streamers. I've never had much confidence in Congo hair or EP fiber as tails for smaller streamers. The systhetic fibers may work fine for larger streamers (5+ inches); but anything smaller I prefer natural materials like marabou, rabbit strip or artic fox . Nicely done, Tim. I'll have to borrow your idea and start playing Congo hairs.
  8. Ryan and Tim, another technique to consider (other than the bucktails and mono loops) is the double bunny. Something like this: . The part that you glued the two bunny pieces together provided a stiffer tail. I normally use Hard As Hull Head Cement to glue them together first. If a stiffer tail is desired, I droped a few drops of Thin Zap a Gap on the sides of the tail base to stiffen it up.
  9. Good job, Mike. For you, I'll have to bring a new sculpin pattern that I've been working on. Similar in concept of the Foxy Crawdad, but with deer hair spinning and icedub. I'll bring materials for anyone would like to try these sculpins also.
  10. Tim, These are awesome looking flies. Really like the yellow and white one. What make the pink cheek? Maker?
  11. This is out standing.. Well proportion.. Good job Ryan.
  12. John - Great pictures and a wonderful story. One of the wonders of fishing for me is to crack the river mysteries. I'm glade that you did and in a big way. Andy - I grew up in Thailand and fished for snakeheads when I was a little boy using just a piece of bamboo as a rod and a string tied to the end of it (no reel) and worms as baits. Those smaller snakeheads (0.5-2lbs) are wonderful eating fishing. Funny how lifes turned out. A guy grew up in Illinois ended up working in Thailand, and a guy grew up in Thailand ended up here in Chicago.
  13. Thanks everyone. Just some quick notes on these flies. These jigs were tied traditional style. All I did was adding dubbing of craft furs for the all- white jig or icedubs for the white/chart jig around their collars to cover up the threads and trimed. These jigs were tied using 90 degrees jig hooks, coneheads, 3D eyes, and reversed-tie craft furs for the bodies and dubbing loop of craft furs for the collars and trimed.
  14. For those of you lookinig for something different in the FnF jigs to tye. here are a few that I created a while back:
  15. I'll bring enough materials for everyone to tye along. The only thing that I won't have enough is the thread. The recipe called for Ultra Thread 140 Fl. Fire Orange. I got it from Cabela's, but you can use any other threads as substitute. The Foxy Crawdad is a level 3 difficulty fly in a 1-5 scale. It is a fun fly to tye and very effective. Hope to see you there.....
  16. You nailed it Rob. I have not stretched the line since switched to large arbor reels. Even back in the small arbor reel days, all I did was striped enough line out, casted downstream, and let the current did the work.
  17. Jim - My personal experience is that SA flylines got the slickest coating. I had tried RIO, Orvis, and Airflo lines; but non can compare to SA slickness.
  18. Absolutely agreed. Close enought is good enough for me too. Great flies.
  19. Nice looking bugs. I've not fished surface bugs much. I'll have to try some this coming season. Pretty minnows. What are the bodies made of? Simple and beautiful. These reminded me of the old Mickey Fin and Black Nose Dace.
  20. A bunch of good looking flies and beautifully tyed. They will make good jack & tarpon flies. Is that a rattle sticking out of the black snake? Merry Christmas.....
  21. Beautiful flies Tim. Have not done any acrylic flies yet and my congo hairs are still in their packages. Made me want to try some.
  22. Thanks for the positive feedbacks.
  23. Great start Mike. The pheasant cheek really made the fly look distictive.
  24. In one was inpired by Tim's Sanyo sculpins. Really like the icedubbed heads of those sculpins. For these flies, I used dumbell eyes and threw in a holiday color. This one, the dumbell eyes were tied under the hook shank so this fly would ride hook point down. The second one, the dumbell eyes were tied ontop of the hook shank so the fly would swim hook point up. That was #12. Completed myself challenge of 12 craft fur flies before Christmas. It has been a fun odyssey. Thanks for your attentions. Happy holidays everyone.
  25. Beautifully tied. That will be great for shallow waters. Love the name. I hope I'll be using something like that in a few months. Now that winter is here, I've been dreaming Belize.
