  1. Thanks. Zebras are a common home aquarium pet. Maybe they learn a lot by watching from their side of the glass. The article suggests that we can learn from watching from our side.
  2. Rest of the Story... Eventually a sale on the PQ came along. But by then I had bought a Lew's LFS from Cabela's. Decisive factors were good reviews and a Cabela's gift certificate and a sale on the Lew's. I got the mid speed - 6/1 or so. It is the smallest thing I have seen that still spools 120 of 12#. It takes some getting used to. I like the magnetic braking in lieu ( for Rob) of the centrifugal studs typical of Shimano and others. It makes dialing in much easier when you do not have to open up the reel to reset the studs. So far so goon. I wish I Could use ti more.
  3. If you click the jpg link the picture should show. But , if the host site is not active any more, the pics will not come up.
  4. In the past I have purchased topo maps or DeLormes to explore an area for roads and access to fishing opportunities. Now National Geographic has put up a site where you can get free USGS Quad maps for any location in the country in printable PDF format. It is easy to use. The PDF for each Quad includes 5 pages, Here is their description of what you get. Page 1 is an overview map showing the Quad in context. Pages 2 through 5 are the standard USGS Quads cut in quarters to fit on standard printers. Hillshading has been added to each page of the PDF to help visualize the topography. Give it a try. http://www.natgeomaps.com/trail-maps/pdf-quads
  5. WWKS? Go to the guru. When the bulk of the head increases we use a larger hook so that body material does not block the point. And a long shank 3X puts the point further away from that bulky head. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o46/MikeG742/2015/DSCF2258.jpg The Classic Zoo Cougar
  6. John, There are a lot of reviews of these yaks on Amazon. Certainly the price is right. I see some big trade offs in the design. You get high stability and 500# capacity. You loose light weight and speed. Practically that means having to heave some weight up to the top of an SUV, and you will have to work harder to get where you are going. (I would not want to paddle this one back upstream after a float or on a large body of water where you have to go some distance to get to your spot.) On the other hand it is said to be fun on ponds and stable enough for kids to dive off of it. The design gives up performance features to get recreational features.

    Danvise

I just noticed J. Stockard has a sale on the vise and extension arm. If you were thinking... http://www.jsflyfishing.com/danvise?utm_source=July+2016+SOM&utm_campaign=20160701+SOM&utm_medium=email It's my workhorse.

  9. Thanks for the comments. The PQ looks like a good proven workhorse at a reasonable price. I am sure Eric gives reels a workout. I am hoping to see a sale soon. But I won't hold my breath.
  10. A hired gun, like ronk suggested, is the safest way to go. You and your Bro will have some $$$ invested by the time he gets here. Economizing on on a guide service or skipping one is "penny wise and pound foolish." Since he is a tyer, here's a picture that I call "Flies That Work:" I won't leave home without these, a rubber bug, a Stealth Bomber, a Hairy Fodder, and Lefty's R/W. OK there is one more. Add a blockhead or Lefty's Bug. Good chance the guide service will tie one of these or something like it on your tippet based on "conditions." "Fish are on the top , the bottom, or somewhere in between."
  11. Oops again? Corrected link: http://www.arkiejigs.com/product-p/wmh.htm
  12. Oops! Here's the link to the $2.60/5 Mushrooms. http://www.arkiejigs.com/category-s/2568.htm?searching=Y&sort=2&cat=2568&show=10&page=2
  13. No problem Scott. With the Arkie Mushrooms that cost $2.60 for 5. I cut off the molded lead keeper and then wrap on a wire keeper made of #5 stainless with my fly tying thread. Here's the concept on a swim jig head. I leave the collar on so I have a place for the skirt. Wurks gud! Use the same concept on a different jig. No skirt. A reason to take up fly tying even if you don't use a fly rod.
  14. Good review. I have had good results with this plane Jane nuthin' bait too. It is not hard to find light jigs with large hooks. You may already have some, besides the Mushroom heads we commonly see.: Slider or Sled Heads Weighted Keeper Hooks EWG weighted worm hooks. In their Bass Jig Heads, Arkie Jigs has a few good jigs including an economical mushroom. http://cdn3.volusion.com/ufyzk.uhmky/v/vspfiles/photos/TIHK-2T.jpg?1434433075 http://www.arkiejigs.com/ARKIE-BASS-TUBE-AND-GRUB-HEAD-p/tihk.htm http://www.arkiejigs.com/ARKIE-WEEDLESS-TUB-AND-GRUB-HEAD-p/tihw.htm There is another wrinkle to this. Guys use a Hitchhiker to attach a swivel and spinner blade to the rear of the worm. (Borrow the blade from a jig spinner.) This also works on a Senko. I have not tried this. It should work when fish want more flash.
  15. It used to be that the Curado was sort of a benchmark though now I hear the quality of that model ain't what it used to be. That brings up my question. What do your recommend as a good general purpose reel, 10-20# line, 1/4 to 3/4 oz lures? I would like to hear what you guys are using.

Maybe it was Joy Churchill, a girl I met in college. More to the point of the 20" club, Winston did say, Golf is a good walk spoiled.

  19. Four more days starting today. http://www.cabelas.com/browse.cmd?categoryId=105993180&WT.tsrc=EML&WT.mc_id=email-nl&eid=6138037&cmp=EP20160428&seg=EPP0ALL&cnt=12121&ctb=SUBFEAT3 Steve, I appreciate your determination. My last Chevy was made in Canada, though I have the consolation that it is an American company. Is Ford better being controlled by Brit interests. they do not have labor problems; they have labour problems. And so on tillyou get the the Buick from China. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-gm-is-importing-a-buick-from-china-130758915.html
  20. I like the stash on that bass! One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.
  21. Would this work for Bass if you upsize the flies? I know that a #18 midge is a great way to catch big Smallmouths. Use the midge to catch a bucketfull of 4-7" Creek Chubs. Fish the chubs on a 1/0 Kahle hook. 24. Are you sure? It is very unusual for a fisherman to understate a length.
