    new flies

We are dying to see one, rich.

  5. This is worth watching. You may have seen sparrows flocking around a feeder. But Eagles? https://weloveanimals.me/alaskan-man-is-feeding-a-huge-flock-of-bald-eagles-then-the-camera-pans-left/
  6. Excellent point. I will revise to make it clear. The ISA M-80 Winer, the pour man's plopper, made with genuine synthetic wine cork! A pour man cannot afford real cork.
  7. Several look good. I am leaning toward: The ISA M-80 Winer, the pour man's plopper, made with genuine wine cork!
  8. I had to comment on this non-political discussion. Rob's statement is called criminalizing the victim. We see it often in the form of a question. For example, when a girl is a victim of date rape, we ask, "What kind of girl would would date a guy like him?" It puts the blame on the victim. President Obamma had his hand's tied by the R House and Senate. Can you blame him? There was a stalemate there. At least over zealous Rs could not repeal the laws we had because of his veto. Now, watch out! Whom do I write?
  9. I need your help naming this lure. First some background. I am dedicating this lure to the ISA because their website inspired its creation. Last summer ISA members reported Dahlberg's Whopper Plopper was slaying Smallmouths on local rivers. But at $10 to $15 you can't say Larry was giving them away. So I came up with a working man's version made from common household items and common lure parts. The winning name will be inserted in the title, ISA lurename. I hope to send one in for the Blowout. The unique action is provided by a Roto Blade. Thanks in advance for your ideas.
  10. Reverse ties are a pain since you have to hold the material in position in the right hand and wrap with the left to tie materials on (if you are right handed). For my swap flies I am going to use the clouser mode on my vise and switch back and forth from clipping the hook by the bend and by the eye. I'LL let you know.
  11. John, That looks like a great entry for Eric's Sunfish competition.

    hollow swap

Put me down for a R/W craft fur with real imitation Junglecock eyes.
  13. If you need reeaallly long fur, Google "Party Wig." Lots of colors and usually reasonable prices.
  14. Like rich says, squeeze the mono stem real hard where you will tie it on. that roughs up the surface so that it will not pull out. PS Thanks to Rob for blazing the trail. This thread reminded me that a drop of epoxy or UV can transform a flat stick on eye (3 cents) to a 3D eye (30 cents)--quite a savings.
  15. Brilliant! Tie an overhand knot or singe the end of the mono to form a round lump before you goo it. That should make it even harder to pull off.
  16. Indeed. Flies have evolved also. There's one conceived by the great LaFontaine and executed by Gretchen and Al Beatty puts the target eyes back by the hook point, the better to catch fish. So there is a whole new line of discussion dealing with where to put the eyes on the fleye.
  17. Rob, Tab eyes are suggested but hard to find. Imitation Jungle Cock is cheap and easy to find. So? Then too, a lot of prose and poetry has been written about eyes on flies. Yet bass swarm to get to soft plastics that have no eyes. Are eyes really that important to the fish?
  18. I usually use 12# mono. But I am thinking about going down to 10 and maybe trying flouro. Any thoughts?
  19. They look good. It looks like craft fur is a good material to practice on.
  20. The new winter edition, just out, has a good article on fake fur for tying and another good one on fly fishing the fox for Muskie and other fish and also a good article on Pike by Josh. Here's a link where you can either read the edition and/or subscribe. http://atightloop.com/editions/Winter2017/
  21. PS I just found out that my mail box was full and not taking new messages. If you sent a message earlier, please resend it.
  22. Rod, As always you are write. Thanks for the notice that my bocks was full. I emptied a few to make rheum. Now I knead a clean X. Thanks for the note on your available color. I am well stocked in those. Mark, BTW rich and I have explored outside the box of standard flytying colors and fly brands by dipping into the inventory of Distinctive Fabricks. http://www.distinctivefabric.com/long-pile-faux-fur/huskyfur1.htmlThere are some patterns that work well on flies like the Husky Fur. I made this Crappie imitation by cutting "bunny" strips from the swatch. DF sells sample swatches roughly 4" x 5" that give you enough for a lot of flies. Keep it in mind if you get bored of solid colored fake fur.
  23. I have a Fishing Buddy II that you can mount on your Yak if you are handy. Price will be reasonable. PMail me if interested.
  24. Nice old film. Greenheart is a nasty piece of wood. Though it is known for strength and practically decay and insect proof, it has some other properties to watch out for. It contains toxins that attack internal organs. All that sawdust flying around in the old film made me hold my breath. Don't do this at home.
