  1. Hey Craig, I heard today that a man in Cumming was severely bitten by a beaver while fishing. He used his belt as a tourniquet to keep from bleeding to death. What is going on down there? Gregg
  2. I assume the state park Dan R referred to is Devil's Lake. It is a deep, clear lake. If you haven't been there, it is beautiful. Scuba divers frequent it because of depth and clarity. I have seen some nice LMB caught there. 10 or 15 minutes south of the Dells. Gregg
  3. Kevin, You asked what works in the Apple- Right now there are lots of visible small minnows and small crayfish. Most people I have fished with there (and me)tend to use small sized plastics; small senkos, slider worms, small twister tales, etc. Sometimes there has been a good bite fishing them fast, but not yesterday. I saw a couple yesterday catching bass by still-fishing with nightcrawlers. They appeared to be doing better than we were. Gregg
  4. Paul, Your message box is full! Weather permitting a will attend outing on Sunday. Gregg
  5. Mike, anybody; Do we have any idea how DNR fared in Gov's budget and what implications might be for park closings, etc? Gregg
  6. Mike, You started by apologizing for the long rant, and you have had longer rants than this one. No need for apology here.
  7. I agree: Nice work on this Mike. I applaud the stick-to-itiveness to do the follow-up. Getting smeared by sloppy or intentionally misleading reporting: Anyone who supported the health care reform legislation knows what that feels like. Gregg

The Apple is a challenging wade because there is so much rock. The tendency to look at the water rather than where you place your feet can get you in trouble. However, you are rarely wading in water more than a foot deep, so I just fall down and get back up. No problem. Gregg

I think Don has the Plauck boys reversed.
  10. Attendance? $$$ raised? Mike and Eric, You took some great pics. Gregg
  11. Paul et al, I am going to try coming out on the 16th. Is there a person presenting on lure making? Gregg
  12. Hey Mike, If you, or someone else, was paid a living wage to do it rather than trying to do it around another method of earning a living, alot more would get done. This is where money does come in. A national alliance would work if a grant paid the salary of an "Executive Director" whose job included rallying and supporting volunteers and affiliates, or if it paid for a "Policy Director" that lobbied elected officials and/or sued polluters, etc. Look at Prairie Rivers Network, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, Duck Unlimited for example. Volunteers and board members are important but paid staff have time to see projects to conclusion. It doesn't hurt to dream does it? Gregg

    old lures

Rich, I would have some things to contribute to an "old time tackle box." I'll find time to dig some things out before saturday. Gregg
  14. What will it take to reach the next level? 1)a meeting involving the various midwest alliances that results in committment to a national alliance 2)a successful grant application or significant donation to get it started 3)if an individual or group not affiliated with existing alliances tried to do it they would be met with suspicion rather than support My 2 cents worth Gregg
  15. I agree with Norm (Ithink). I have never been cold in waders, and have always been too hot in neoprene waders. Gregg

Kevin Dells and Brian O'Kelley is correct for my posts. Scott's reference is to Kevin's talent for being followed around by torrential rains. Gregg

  25. Jude, You might be right that you can develop skills that allow you to stay in, rather than get out of the kayak. I find that I want to get out frequently for comfort, AND I fish a good area more thoroughly on foot. At the end of this season I rigged a way to lift the seat. I had it out on a lake that way, but not a stream yet. I am hoping it improves my comfort during a long sit. For those who don't recognize him, it is Jude fishing from his kayak in the picture with my article in the Bulletin. I took the pic two (?) years ago on the Kishwaukee. Gregg
