  1. Looking for suggestions for a kayak. I know there are a number of Jackson users on this forum. Which would you recommend and why? I'm 6' and 215lbs and primarily would be using it on the fox and kankakee with a trip or two a year on the dupe and mazon. Initially I'm leaning toward the Big rig because of stability.
  2. Suspending jerkbait Rattle bait Walk the dog topwater Buzzbait Hula grub For flies: Murdich minnow Tequilly Foxee clouser Home invader Meat whistle
  3. 7 weight. I have owned and fished rods all over the spectrum and the seven seems to be the most versatile of the weights I have used for smallmouth. Strong enough to fight wind and handle most any smallmouth fly and light enough to enjoy the typical smallmouth's fight.
  4. I fish stripers in tennessee a couple times a year. Best color combos have been chartuese over white with silver and or chart krystal flash and typical grey over white with chart/yellow crystal flash laid in as a lateral line. I like krystal flash because of its durability over flashabou. You could also try tying jigs for him umbrella style with "fish hair". This style jig excells in fast water snap jigging in dam areas. Again chartuese and white are prodominate colors. Another suggestion would be to epoxy thread wraps extremely well. The sandpaper type teeth of stripers are hard on wraps. I have used uv epoxies but good old devcon two part seems more durable even though it yellows quickly with age.
  5. Made my day watching that...thanks!
  6. This trout stocking isnt something new. It has gone on for many years and I haven't seen any effect to the river itself. If you know of some ill effect the trout have had on the smallmouths of the kankakee river system please post this info. I don't remember seeing this brought up in years past when the trout were dumped in rock creek??
  7. If you want to stick to the Echo line of rods, I suggest you try an Echo 3S 10 weight.
  8. Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm looking for something closer than the Hayward area. I can always poke into the UP of Michigan and look at the black river or something along those lines.
  9. I'm heading up to the Hurley area of Wisconsin (iron county). Does anyone have any suggestions of wadable rivers for smallmouth within an hour or two drive? The friends I'm visiting don't fish so they have no suggestions besides the Gile flowage itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  10. Some of my favorite rods to fish (Scott heliplys) came in only 3pc configurations with the unsightly spigot ferrules I guess that is why there are so many different rod manufacturers making fly rods. That is a beautiful build on the Steffen.
  11. I have two smallmouth flyfishing DVD's and one book on flyfishing for smallmouth. The DVD 's are Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass with Harry Murray and Smallmouth on the Fly Volume 1. The book is a hard cover book of Smallmouth Strategies for the Fly Rod by Will Ryan. I'm looking to get 20$ shipped for all 3 items.
  12. I too thought it was a quality event. The location was good but it was definetly lacking the salt and warm water footage.
  13. I'm still running a pair of Simms Guide waders (8 years on them!) They have been in for repair several times to simms and had lower seams resealed, new neoprene feet, and tons of pinholes patched. When I do buy a new set of breathables it will be from Simms or Orvis. I agree with the above posts that I have only heard positive things about the Orvis waders with sonic seams adn their warranty is one of the best in the buisness too.

    Hatch

I would have to think it would be Hexagenia. They come off lakes, ponds backwaters ect. I know it is late in the season compared to the famous hatches in Wisconsin and Michigan trout rivers. Here is some info on Hex: http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/32/Mayfly-Hexagenia-limbata-Hex

  16. Give Greg Dickson a call at Triangle Sports in Antioch. It's his tournament partner that caught that fish. If I had to guess I would say somwhere near the 24" range. I haven't been able to get one that that hit the elusive two foot mark yet. Here is a link to a write up on the fish http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/articles/05.21.2013/5787/Wisconsin.angler.hooks.-pound.smallmouth.at.Sturgeon.Bay.Open/index.html
  17. I was going to say..pics can be very deceiving. Both are big fish with big blocky builds but scales themselves that are certified don't lie. If true weights are of interest I suggest a scale made by Revive. This scale has proven itself to be very accurate and has good features at a good price. http://www.revivefishing.com . I would have liked to see the true weight on Ron's fish as I'm sue it was impressive.
  18. Here is something I recently read: "Canadian Geese in flight can be majestic, grand, and inspiring. It’s when they get down on land that another problem appears… goose poop. Waterfowl, according to some studies, can produce 25% to 34% of the total phosphorous budget in a watershed. And phosphorous is what we need to control around the Three Lakes in order to control weeds and algae." "Left unchecked, their population will double every 5 years. While feeding, geese defecate every 7 minutes. Each goose produces 1 to 3 pounds of waste per day. In addition to phosphorous, they contribute pathogens such as e coli and the bacteria that cause swimmer’s itch, as well as giardia, cryptosporidium, and campylobacter. Geese are one vector for the spread of invasive plants such as milfoil and water chestnut." Now if we could just get rid of all the non migratory geese, ban use of fertilizer use on watershed areas as well as drainage our only problem would be low water!
  19. I have heard that the boom in geese (increased loads of goose waste!)using ponds, lakes and rivers has added to the amount of algea growth especially in most ponds. I know most I fish are loaded with them and cormorants. I sadly see very few mallards using them anymore. Add these factors to the low water and heavy use of nitogen rich fertilizers and you have a perfect envirionment for huge algea growth.
