  1. Starting off with some smallmouth candy...a shad and impressionistic hellgrammite
  2. I will enter with an attractor by flyfishfood, the moodah poodah- Patrick Haaker
  3. Tied based on fly by Gunnar Brammer. Bought one and his quality is insane. It is a terrible waste but it will stay unfished as I like to use my ties. Here is my close tie. I am happy with the result, but will need to work on a couple duplicates
  4. I'm getting into the tying mood. I've got some bass trips planned for the summer and I know bass love bluegill. Here is what I came up with, coming in at 3 1/2 inches long
  5. It is definitely interesting. I have awoke from my fly fishing sleep and tied some cloister variants in a similar fashion.
  6. Always liked galloups flies. I decide to see what the bronze like the most. First up for me... Sex dungeon...add your cool flies.
  7. The first two pics are to show the curve of the top of the head...the fly was cleaned up and trimmed significantly
  8. Here is the head shape I am talking about
  9. I want to see who the first fly guy to catch a smallie on a rattle snake is!
  10. I am just trying to point out that the mechanical advantage the hook lever provides compared to the force of the fish and fight is not really going to make a whole lot of difference. True some advantage will be gained by a longer hook, but not enough to worry about. It sounds like we mostly agree. When hunting Brutus every little bit helps. BTW I am not a physics expert by any means 4 of the 5 periods I teach are biology, there is over simplification in my explanation, but many of these factors will not be significant(rod length, the angle you hold it when fighting, and how deep of water you are standing in or how far above the water would all mean more). All coming from a short hook user. Torque means more for treble hooks because they cant pivot with two buried points and will pull out a a specific amount of twisting force
  11. I teach high school physics. The only problem with equation you supplied is that the force applied is not tangent to the lever arm. I pull the fish in line with the hook. Hook gap will have a much greater affect on a hooks ability to hold. IMHO
  12. I am not too sure that I buy the idea that short hooks are better than long hooks because of lever action. When I use a wrench I push on the handle. I don't tie a rope to the end and hang from a flag pole, yanking on the end of the rope trying to loosen or tighten a bolt. With this said, I tie most of my flies on gamakatsu B10S hooks because they work well for the proportions I use. Most of my flies are articulated so a 6xl hook is not necessary to achieve a specific length. Most of my takes are also on the front hook (head) unless it is a smaller fish. I like the gap to shank ratio on shorter-shanked hooks and typically won't use more than a 3xl.
  13. Base off of Lynch's Drunk and Disorderly, I have a fly with an interesting problem. It has too much side to side action where it can go into a roll. It is a coated deer hair wedge shaped head, but I used an old concave double edge razor to cut the top. The action is too much. I wanted to know if anyone could suggest a technique to keep the action, but stabilize the fly. I am against mucho weighting. I will post a pic of the finished fly, send the winner a fly, and step by step recipe.
  14. Articulated deceiver in a sort of firetiger. Comes out to about 7 inches.
  15. First one is articulated; it rides point up. With the marabou and packed deer head it sinks slowly and has been magic on the early season bass. Fun tie.
  16. This has been my hot spring fly. And something hardy for the summer.
  17. If you are still looking for someone I could tie a cool subsurface slider
  18. Just got back from wisconsin. Taped a few largemouth from a lake and two brown trout mousing at night. Second cast was the largest at 15".
  19. Stays up but rides low. The tail is half a rubber band. Looking forward to trying it. I used white thread and my wife said the nose should be pink so I went over it with pink thread.
  20. I think I am going to try my hand at mousing smallies at night. Anyone ever give it a try? Anyways this is my first mouse attempt ever.
  21. It is senyo laser dub, ice dub is too flashy for me plus it adds translucence and keeps the craft fur from fouling. I think I am packing the head too much as they want to float for a long time. The bass don't seem to mind, but I want to have it sink a little.
  22. Your cf muddler looked really good so I had to copy it with a few changes.
