I just wanted to post up and introduce myself to the group. I just recently moved to the area on the advice of my uncle sam. I am currently in north chicago area so the majority of my smallmouth chasing will be the Des plaines and the Fox. I happened to stumble upon BartD at the river over the weekend and found the rumors true that this is a great group of fisherman. I am primarily a gear slinger but am truely looking forward to getting back in to fishing with stick and feather as well as dusting off my tying gear. The vast majority of my fly fishing has been for trout and steelhead out west and large mouth bass in virginia. I hope to get out this week to the meet up at st. Mary's park and learn some tricks of the trade and meet some of you to put faces with the names.

On a side note i am slightly going through withdrawls not having fished a kayak tournament in months so if anyone knows of any kayak tournaments within driving distance i would love to know about them.

Welcome Jesse and thank you for your service.

You happened to stumble across a good man. Bart is a smallmouth nut.

Not sure if your so called "kayak" will fit in our rivers, but if you want to give it a try....

Try to meet up with some members for some smallie chasing and try to make a couple outings if you uncle will allow you.

I had an uncle Sam once, so I know how they can be at times.

Welcome again

I have found the great lakes kayak group and i believe they have a tournament either this weekend or next weekend. The only problem is i believe they are geared towards fish that my kayak is not set up for just yet. Would love to see how many people may be interested in intra/inter region challenges or tournaments.

Jesse, a lot of us were looking forward to the Riverbassin Tournament that usually takes place in Aurora in late July but was cancelled this year. Hopefully next year someone can pick up the ball and run the tournament which really wouldn't be that difficult and has big potential IMO. I think it would be fun to do a intra club tourney as well.

it was good to meet you as well Edward, was tough watch those fish crashing caddis and other bugs and not being able to do much with them.

Bart I read about the river bassin and was disapointed to learn that. If there is enough interest I can make some calls to tournament directors and we can mesh together rules that would fit the club. Simple enough Catch Photo Release format with a identifier either handed out or emailed out directly prior to fishing. Either do a big fish or a three fish aggregate. Either seperate Fly from terminal or have everyone together.

I would like to see some lake based tourneys, there are a number of smaller state and county lakes you could run one at. I would say keep it under 500 acres, I know of three canidates in my region off the top of my head.

I just don't know the details of how to run and organize one, I imagine you'll need permits, reservations a food guy.........

I can look in to permits and permission. Keep in mind if it is just a club gathering challenge then it would be the same as the weekly get togethers. When you start having prizes involved then you run in to the legalities of it. A simple challenge for bragging rights would be easy enough to set up.

Fishing Tournaments

As fishing tournaments are becoming increasingly popular, tournament organizers should be aware that in some cases, a fishing tournament permit is required. Organizations wishing to hold a fishing tournament on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) reservoirs (Lake Shelbyville 217/774-3951, Carlyle Lake 618/594-2484, and Rend Lake 618/724-2493) must obtain a fishing tournament permit and fee from the USACOE Lake Office prior to applying for a IDNR Fishing Tournament Permit. For all other State-owned and managed sites you must contact that site to see if a usage permit is required.

Applications for Fishing Tournament Permits must be received no less than 60 days prior to the tournament date or the permit will be denied. Return completed applications to:

60 days will put anything for this year in atleast october

This is straight from the IDNR website. So first things first the body of water would need to be picked out. Past tournaments I have fished have a "trailer rule" Meaning everyone meets up the night before for a captains meeting or emails will be sent out with the identifier, and from that captains meeting you as the angler have a radius(e.g. 50 miles from the tournament headquarters) to fish the following day. This allows people to choose the body of water they best feel will yield a winning stringer. The downside is , that you don't get the centralized commraderie and competition. (hearing somebody whooping and hollering across the lake will send your mind in to overload when time is running out)

very funny you found that article. Wayne is a friend of mine and I have fished tournaments with him, against him and fished in his tournament that is coming up in october if anyone would like the information and make the pilgrimage to virginia. Keep in mind the TKAA tournament in Virginia is I believe the second largest tournament on the East coast(behind Jamaica Bay NY) and I believe they are looking at having around 300+ fisherman competing this year. If this is a club event then I would say the proceeds could go right back in to the club or any local programs that the club already supports. Donations can come from local business that club members are patrons of and I am sure i can call around to some people who I am sure would support a small tournament in order to further expand the kayak fishing world.

Wayne made some comments about cheating and arguing, I still have rules from most tournaments that I have fished and can contact tournament directors in order to mix and match rules to fit the needs of this event. One of the biggest rules that comes in to play to have people avoid cheating is the identifier. During a CPR tournament the fish is caught, layed on a measuring device and a picture is taken before release. Making sure all cameras have proper date stamp and a unique identifier that is handed out just prior to the event is in the picture to re verify that the fish was caught during the tournament time line.

Sounds like you have this tourney stuff dialed in, should we maybe start with a friendly club outing for yaks on a lake? Something that would not require a permit.

As a fun get together using the ISA forums would be fine. Any tournament stuff would need to fall within our mission statement:

Dedicate to Improving Illinois Smallmouth Fishing Through Conservation and Education.

So a tournament to to expand the kayak fishing world would not fall under something the ISA would support.

If you exclude Lake Michigan, virtually all smallmouth in our state live in streams and rivers. Thats why our conservation efforts like grants, plantings, etc are river based along with our outings and education.

A few of us were strongly involved in tournaments the last few years. They were based upon Drew Gregory's RiverBassin format of CPR in only movng water. Shore, wade or boat. This was not sponsored by the ISA just supported by some of us who were involved. Here's the event description:

Event description:

The River Bassin (Fishing) Tournament was a unique conservation minded, paddle-powered or shoreline only fishing event, with a catch-measure-photo-release format that promotes sustainability within the environment. Anglers can fish in rivers or streams in a large region of Northern Illinois (see map) beginning at dawn the day of the tournament, and simply take a photo of their catch on a standard measuring board given to all anglers. After taking the photo they release the fish back into the water for future generations to enjoy.

The top angler Tom Loo received a Jackson Coosa fishing kayak, which he donated to the Illinois Smallmouth Association (ISA). This tournament is intended for all ages and skill levels, both amateur and expert fishers.

There are lots of IL based fishing sites (forums) that have thousands of posts and threads on cooling lakes, tournaments, largemouth, and other species. We are an unique organization with a singular mission statement.

Jim I wasn't looking for the ISA to show up with a big pretty banner and sponsor tabel, no thanks. I was just looking to get some like minded members togather for a lake based kayak outing and see were it goes from there. As far as the riverbassn series goes, if I'm not mistaken, it is done? Or am I wrong?

Jim,

I completely agree with mike and I apologize for making it seem as if I was trying to change ISA in any way. I do believe it would be very easy to tie in to help ISA's mission statement with a get together on any body of water. I was a member of Pirates of Lynnhaven which is a saltwater based kayak fishing club and they would do days where we would either go out in the morning and clean up the bay with our kayaks and then come in for lunch and head back out to fish in the afternoon(no rods were allowed in the morning just so you weren't tempted to cast to fish) the other format they used in a friendly competition style format was you had to bring in a certain size bag of trash to be able to register the fish you caught. Just food for thought

Mikea,

I recently fished the National Kayak Bass Fishing Open with Drew and had a chance to talk to him briefly and I believe a lot of his time is possibly working on a fishing show so the tournament trail has slid by the wayside. I know he sounded like he wanted to still work on it but he has a lot more time wrapped up in the production of his show. on a side note I wouldn't mind not fishing against him again because he is a preverbial stud when it comes to kayak fishing.
