  1. Congrats Mike, the only thing I've been catching with that all white Lefty bug of mine is dink bass and numerous crappie. I should name mine the crappie killer but I'm not giving up on it yet.
  2. This is a central Illinois fising event open to all to be held on the Mackinaw River. We will be meeting at 8:00 AM at Busy Corners in Goodfield, IL. Contact Dave Franklin for more information.
  3. This is a central Illinois fishing event open to all on the Kankakee River. We will be meeting at the Kankakee State Park concession stand at 8:00 AM. Contact Dave Franklin for further information.
  4. This is a central Illinois fishing event open to all on the North Vermilion River near Pontiac, IL. Details will come later but for more information, please contact Dave Franklin
  5. I'm heading that way early tomorrow morning. It's a shame we're in for much colder weather than here today.
  6. Well now we're up to $9 grand and that's no longer chump change.
  7. $5950 plus a grand for air travel and gratuities, a mere $7000. Chump change when you really think about it.
  8. I love the concept, hopefully it will take off better than others in the past.
  9. I would claim the mags are only focused on who pays the bills >>>======> the advertisers. Btw, would someone please help me understand how the newest Winston Boron rod at $800 is going to improve my casting technique? That must be one forgiving rod
  10. This is what I first thougt as well, but wow, was I ever wrong. I've spent enough money on tying materials over the years that I could have afforded that Chilean helicopter fishing expedition.
  11. Not sure about the solar guards but do realize that there are very significant differences in the quality or degrees of polarization. Again, for the casual user -> no big deal, but if you're going to be using them a lot -> get the best you can afford.
  12. Mike, I would stay local if I were you because if you need some adjustments in Rx, tint, etc. much better to be close to home. Progressive bifocal placement within the the frame and lens is very very critical and a miniscule difference can make a huge improvement in the quality of your vision. It can't be done well without direct measurement. Costs will be fairly high where ever you go because that particular lens structure, polarized and progressive, are only available thru a couple sources and they charge us an arm and leg for the blanks. I do feel this is a great way to go if you are on the water or even just outdoors a great deal. I personally use a prescription polarized lens along with sometimes small magnifiers attached to the bill of my cap since I'm not forced to wear a bifocal all the time. (An eye doc in denial ) The optics of a polarized prescription lens is far superior to wearing a polarized "fitover" over your clear glasses because of less lens surfaces for the light to be reflected but it works OK for the casual user. Hope this info helps.
  13. Not to intrude here and I'm sorry I didn't pick up on this thread earlier, but as an eye doc that has his own lab, if I can answer any questions on this subject, just let me know.
  14. Fred, I can do a sweep of the southern Vermilion River system, Salt fork, North fork and Middle fork to see how many signs we might need but that's a days travel and effort for sure for one person. Would definitely appreciate any help. I'll probably need to take out a small business loan in order to cover the cost of fuel for my van. ^ ^ ^ "Not appreciating this at all"

    Caution?

A new meaning to the phrase, "Get the Lead Out !"
  16. THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED FOR THE TIME BEING UNTIL THE WATER LEVELS RECEDE. Keep checking back for further announcements as to when we will be able to reschedule this event. Rob, I talked with steve b. about a white bass outing and we are going to try one on saturday the 30th on the kaskakia river. we will meet at the hardees in sullivan at nine o'clock pending on river conditions. steve is going to let me know thursday about river conditions,he is concerned about a stretch where it can be a little tricky. hardees is on 121 and easy to find. I will let you know thurs, about the outing. Could you post this please. Thank you, Dave F. (I'm hoping we can pull this off but as high as the water is right now and the fact that it's supposed to rain all week might make it difficult. Please keep checking back.)

  18. Fred, big difference from last year vs. this season. Last year was relatively dry and very warm early on, at least 2 weeks ahead of the normal season vs. this year when you are seeing river levels in some areas not seen in many years ( in the case of Cairo, IL not since the 1937 floods of the Ohio River) Right now the Kaskaskia flow is 10X the median for this date and depth is 3X what it was last week and going higher
  19. I have for sale a G Loomis GL3 8'6" 5 wt 2 piece fly rod custom built. I will sell it for the price of the blank alone which is $139 shipped. The rod normally retails for more than twice that. It has been demo-ed but is in like new condition. It comes with a rod sock and PVC storage tube. I should mention that the rod was built up with Fuji Alconite fly guides. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

    Its flats time

Excellent Mike, I'm assuming that those are Lake Michigan flats, and if so, I'm surprised they're up there this early. Would have thought it might take warmer temps. Very cool

    New ride

Wow, I think it's neat. Unfortunately the weakling that I am, 77 lbs would be too much for me to handle by myself. Congrats.
  23. Don't hesitate over-lining the rod by one weight if you're concerned with that. In fact Holschlag feels that over-lining by one or two weights should almost be the norm.
  24. RIO tapered leaders that I often use come in around $4 ea. so quite the cost savings. I went ahead and ordered last night the 40, 30, 20 lb Trilene Big Game in the 1/4 lb spools from Jan's Netcraft. Cost after rebate and shipping will be a total of $24. I figure it's worth 5 pre-tapered leaders for our region members to see if we like the performance with the possibility of making hundreds of leaders. Should be fun building them and trying them out.
