  1. I just started throwing swim jigs toward the tail end of last season. I began to throw them as I always love to pick up a new technique. I read all of Jim Kasts' posts about the power of the swim jig. Let me tell you...........HE WAS NOT WRONG!! The last month or so of the fall I absolutely killed smallies on the swim jig. Especially big fish! I can guarantee I will have one tied on a bunch next spring. Now that I am making them, I can make any color combo I want. Next, I am going to be working on a swim jig that matches a small Rock Bass.
  2. Below are three of my new patterns for my swim jigs. I am calling my swim jigs "The Scout" From top to bottom: bluegill clown Green Sunfish.
  3. You can also check out www.blueridgekayakfishing.com.
  4. This video should get you steered in the right direction. http://www.viddler.com/explore/hawghead/videos/4/
  5. Oh crap Jim, I knew somebody would do this to me. Now I will have to google search it. I will post again in a few minutes.

The law in Illinois states that if the stream is not listed as navigatable with the state, then you need permission to wade or canoe. It does not matter if the stream can be floated or not, you still need permission............by law. In Wisconsin, all streams are open to the public. I think there is even a small easement upon the bank where anglers can walk.
  7. In addition, anyone into Kayak fishing really should get the new book by Jeff Little. I have it and it is outstanding. Not only about Kayak fishing, but also some great tips about targeting trophy smallmouths.
  8. Check out this video. good music also.

The above picture is of a stream in Wisconsin where I just pulled up along the road, grabbed my rod, and went fishing. VERY NICE!

All streams in Wisconsin are open to the public as long as access is gained from a public spot (i.e. a bridge). This means you can canoe or wade a stream as long as you enter from public places and stay in the water.
  11. The guy's name is Mike Dial. If you google his name, I am sure you will find him.
  12. Deep is relative to your flow. In my rivers, four feet is awful deep, and five or six feet is "crazy" deep. If these areas have slow or moderate current, that is where I start. Now, I will say I have caught many winter smallies in areas where it was shallower than four feet, but I will say that when I normally catch those shallow fish, deeper water is close by. John, hope this helps a little. YOu know you can call me at any time!!!
  13. Mr. Terrill: You are right! IT IS DEFINITELY FLOAT N FLY TIME! If anyone is fishing during this time period, and is not throwing the fnf, they are truly missing the boat!
  14. I have a Falcon 6 foot casting rod I would like to sell. It is a medium action. I have used it only a handful of times. I payed $75 and am asking $45. I will pay shipping or hand deliver it. PM me if interested.
  15. I will be there selling my jigs and promoting my guide service. Should be a good time. Hope to see all there.
  16. Guess I did not answer the first prompt. When it comes to winter fishing, I carry very few lure types. Usually start with a suspending jerkbait (pointer 65 is my favorite). If that doesn't work I will usually go to a small tube or hair jig/trailer fished slowly along the bottom. And lastly, my ace in the hole is the float n fly. If none of those options work, I am either fishing in the wrong place or at the wrong time of day.
  17. I don't know how to stop fishing for smallmouths!
  18. I just sent Mr. Pallo and email and congratulated him from the ISA.
  19. I will have to find out his email or phone. I will work on that.
  20. Steve Pallo has been named acting chief of Fisheries here in Illinois. If you don't know Steve, he is a great guy. Though a muskie nut, he has a fondness for smallies as well. Our fish should be in capable hands!
  21. So it's Monday morning after a great weekend of fishing. Gotta go to work like everyone else. Hate Mondays! How can I spice up a cloudy, windy morning???? Going fishing before work...............of course - why didn't I think of that sooner. Anyway, I hit a wintering area before work. Woke up early, threw on some clothes, and off I went. I fished for 30 minutes and was able to catch one nice 15 inch smallie on the float n fly. Made my day, and made Monday not seem so bad. Maybe I will make breakfast with the smallies a habit? Stay tuned.
  22. Is there a phone number I could reach you at?
  23. Wow! Just checked out your site. I am very impressed. I make jigs myself. Yours are very nice. I think I will be placing an order for skirts very soon.
  24. I think I fished one of your prototypes this summer with Rich M. on the Rock River. Really liked the bait. I will order some come spring.
