Guest Issom Beituni
I went to check my local flyfishing spots to see how the flows were. Then this was posted. USGS 05540500 DU PAGE RIVER AT SHOREWOOD, IL USGS 05539000 HICKORY CREEK AT JOLIET, IL OUR FUNDING PARTNER HAS DECIDED TO DISCONTINUE FUNDING FOR THIS STREAMGAGE EFFECTIVE JUNE 30, 2009. IF A NEW FUNDING SOURCE IS NOT FOUND, THIS STREAMGAGE WILL BE DISCONTINUED ON JULY 1, 2009. What does this mean? Thanks
Kev-mo
From what I understand it's not cheap to operate and maintain these gauges. So I guess it means just what it says, the funding to maintain these two is going away. It also states that you should contact them if you believe that the gauge should continue to be funded. I would send them an email, I already have.
Mike Clifford
Found my notes on this from a previous discussion..... From the Chief of the USGS Hydrologic Data Section in Illinois- Costs for a full discharge gauge are about $12k to $18k per year per site, depending on the complexity of flows. For stage only, cost is about $5k per year per site. Extra data parameters such as air and water temp, raingauge, humidity, wind speed/direction, solar radiation, etc... are "options" and cost anywhere from about $1k to $3k per station per year. These costs pay for field staff to keep the gauges running, and office staff to QA, analyze, and publish the data both in real-time, but also in a long-term, national database. TimU
I was going to ask about the Alliance possibly adopting(funding) a few key gauges that we might all agree on, but at the costs Mike is talking about it doesn't sound feasible. This is really sad news as I have been using the USGS site for flow information for a few years for the Kankakee and Dupage...chalk another one up for the economy! Guest Issom Beituni
this is the email I got back from them Sam, I apologize as I see I did not reply to your email. Thank you for your information and expression of interest for the USGS gage at Hickory Creek at Joliet, IL. Unfortunately, our funding partner will be unable to provide the funds necessary to continue this gage. The cost of the gage for the Federal Fiscal Year of 2009 is $12,250, of which we usually provide some match of USGS funds to defray these costs. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Doug
