  1. Jonn,

I didn't realize you'd gotten an 8 when I suggested a 7wt.Re flies, I've had good luck this year with a black Zonker type streamer. It resembles a leech undulating seductively as you strip it in.Check out a fly available from Cabelas called a Meat Whistle tied on a weighted jig hook.

I love the looks of the Meat Whistle and I have even tied a few. But..I find if Im fishing in the rocks Iam continually hanging up. Do you have any trouble with excessive hang ups with the M.W.?

  2. I am presently looking to purchase a six weight rod/reel combo. I have a few that I like from Cabela's that are in my price range. A few that I am looking at are:

    Redington Cross water combo

    Lefty Kreh Series One combo

    Cabela's Three Forks combos.

Anybody want to comment on these combos, it would be much appreciated.

The Redington and Kreh are probably okay choices, but dont buy anything without casting it first.

Take along a selection of flies you will be throwing with the new rod, it that makes all the difference in the world when trying out a new stick.

A trip to One More Cast in Chicago or Feather Craft in St Louis to check out new rods would be appropriate. I would share gas money to go with you :D .

  3. Jonn you might want to try that 6 wt, its perfect for fishing our small flows and wont wear you out after throwing it all day.

I have an eight weight and if you intend to throw big poppers all day in the wind on bigger flows like the KKK the eight weight would be the best choice. But our small streams where we are throwing streamers and small poppers and you are protected from the wind I think you will enjoy the lighter rod a lot more.

I have even used my three weight on really small streams and had a blast landing smallies under 12".

I have a spare 6 wt I put togeather last year for people in your situation to use. If you arent busy Sunday, or some other time, and want to try it out let me know.

  4. Steve, I was the couple in the Parking lot. We did well that day and got into a large school. Between the two of us we caught 50 or so in short order, not much size to them though. All fish came out of a 75 foot stretch. The scenery, weather, fishing and having my girlfriend there to experience it with made for day I won't forget.

Great to have you on board. I hope to see you at an outing this summer. Please take advanatge of the outings you will learn alot and meet some great people.

  5. I was just curious what makes you a member vs a ISA Forum Registrant? I subscribed late last year after bumping into Steven Jordan on the Apple.

    Thanks,

    Nathan

Nathan I talked to three people that day. Were you the one fishing the pool below the confluence in the park or the couple in the parking lot?

  6. in other words take those feathers out of your hat! thanks norm

Also make sure you arent wearing any small patch of red material, it could be mistaken for a gobblers beard. :o

As a matter of fact you might want to invest a few bucks for one of those orange vests that they sell at the Walmart/K-Mart stores. Better safe than shot.

  7. I havent fished there for years but when I did, on foot, the rip rap at the dam produced some large green fish.

There are some other access points around the lake but I dont remember them producing anything except a few small sunnies.

  8. I have been browsing the spring catalogs for a pair of waders for a friend and Cabellas has a large selection.

In trying to pick something out for him I took a look at the features on my waders that I think are important.

Breathable waders are a must, no more hot neoprenes for me.

I want a pocket on the inside of my waders at chest level with a zipper. If its somewhat water proof so much the better.

Why? I carry my camera and my cars remote door lock there. I have slipped a few times and gotton water in my waders but was able to get the camera out without incident.

Built in rock guards. What a pleasure. I put on my boots slip the guards down over my ankles and fasten the hook on to my laces and forget about them until its time to take them off. Oh yes, with the attached guards you dont lose them.

Shoes get what you can afford. I like felt soles with studs. The studs really help on our muddy banks.

Dont forget a belt, most waders come with one, if yours didnt buy one at the store before you leave. Safety first. :)

  9. Thanks for all the input yall... Going to the library today to look at a Del Lorme Gazetteer.. Does anyone know where I can buy one?

Walden Books and other chain book stores have them in stock. At least the books for the Mid-west.

Dont forget you will also need one for Ind., Wisc., Minn., Mo., Ark., Mich........................ ;)
