Not just brown trout but brown bass will whack this one

The first time I saw Kelly Galloup's Zoo Cougar fly, I immediately thought that it wasn't much more than a glorified marabou Muddler Minnow but I also thought this fly could seriously tempt our smallies. I never got around to tying any up but last week a guide up north gave me one to try for brown trout. Though I didn't get to use it last week, I did today at our Annual East Central Illinois Fall Outing. In less than three hours on the water, I'm sure I landed more than a couple dozen smallies and most fell to the Zoo Cougar. Not just brown trout but brown bass really like to whack this thing. It doesn't run any deeper than about one foot on a floating line so more appropriate for shallow water but it has a really nice action and a wonderful profile. It's also easy to cast on a 5 wt. rod, sooo if you get bored with tossing your usual fare, consider a Zoo Cougar for a nice change of pace. I think this fly would be a good candidate for tying at one of our upcoming central Illinois Bassbugger fly tying sessions this winter.
