Mike Clifford
An editorial in the Journal Standard today. "The proposed hog “factory” in Hancock County, west of Macomb, despite numerous regulatory violations by Professional Swine Management (PSM) and strong farmer and resident opposition, will probably be approved by the Department of Agriculture, which has basically never rejected a permit." Stockton, Ill. — “Hog Farm” and “XL Pipeline” (Jan. 3 issue) are two different issues but share a common thread: corporate promises that bear no resemblance to reality. Both industries gloss over the environmental risks of their proposals, both lie about the number of jobs and economic benefits to the affected communities. Both “work” (look up lobbyists) the politicians and regulatory agencies to gain advantage over affected citizens. The proposed hog “factory” in Hancock County, west of Macomb, despite numerous regulatory violations by Professional Swine Management (PSM) and strong farmer and resident opposition, will probably be approved by the Department of Agriculture, which has basically never rejected a permit. As Jo Daviess County citizens discovered, county board and wide spread citizen opposition has “no standing.” The politically appointed agency (IDOA) has all power and is not subject to voter recourse. Trans Canada Energy’s plans to install a pipeline from Alberta, through six states to U.S. refineries states up to 20,000 jobs will be created; the company admitted later that only a few hundred jobs might be created. The U.S. State Department estimates only about 20 full time permanent jobs would be created. That’s a wide credibility range. http://www.journalstandard.com/opinions/letters_to_the_editor/x338370411/Your-View-Reject-hog-farm-XL-pipeline

ronk
I believe Obama rejected the pipeline sending the planners looking for a route thru less environmentally sensitive areas.
