National conservation groups brace for tough 2009

Recommended Posts

"Critter groups" — species-specific, hunter- and angler-supported foundations that watch out for elk, mule deer, wild sheep, wild trout and others — seem to have weathered the recession well.

In fact, most such groups are reporting a banner year in 2008.

However, they are bracing for the next shock wave from the nation's deteriorating economy and anxiously watching the first quarter of this year, when many hold their annual fundraisers. Officials wonder whether people will volunteer less, contribute fewer dollars or fail to renew their memberships.

"We haven't seen it yet, but we speculate that we probably will," said Neil Thagard of the Wild Sheep Foundation in Cody, Wyo. "In turn, the thing that loses out is the resource, and that would be the sheep on the mountain."

Or, in our case- Smallmouth Bass.

We can't let that happen, not this year.....not ever. If ever there was a time the resource needed us, it is right now.
