Norm M Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 WHY Solitude, peace and joy Only my footprints mark the passage of man in the freshly fallen snow The sounds of nature that fit so well that it's almost silent The slowly falling snow serene and silent A small inflow burbling over rocks on it's descent to the river The river rolling by creaking and groaning along it's frigid path The weed stalks and branches bent under the long beards of ice swaying in the receding flow A beautifully marked smallmouth to hand, at 15 inches, small in size but large in spirit is returned to the chilly water Another cast, as the tube glides to the bottom, a movement caught in the corner of my eye A black squirrel contrasted sharply against the snow searching thru the fallen oak leaves for an acorn or two As I stand motionless and silent a pair of gray squirrels come down the oak to join the search Small birds brown and buff flitting amongst the bare branches A brightly colored cardinal it's crimson plumage brilliant against the snowy back drop plucks berries from a shrub A pair of ducks, a black and white blur winging low over the water's surface Honking, higher, a slightly ragged vee of geese disappearinto the falling snow A splush in the water, no it's not a carp rolling after all. It's a duck diving down for the remaining weeds below the surface. It surfaces downstream and rides the current to do it all over again. I watch until it's lost from view. From across the river a shotgun blast, a whistled command and then the words of praise for a well done retrieve float across the river. A fellow sportsman, a kindred spirit, a soul brother has had success. A pheasant, I'm sure, will grace his table tonight. Even though the shot has ended the reverie it still fits the mood of the day How long had I stood there, what does it matter? Time has no meaning in such a place as I was in. Besides there is another slackwater spot with an inflow a short walk ahead. It holds another smallmouth, I hope, I think, I KNOW! Peace be unto you, Norm Minas aka Creekyknees Quote

joshborton Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Thanks Norm, I enjoyed that. "Time has no meaning in such a place as I was in." I'm going to print this on a t-shirt to wear while fishing. Then I won't have to say a word when I get home a couple of hours later than I said I would when I left to go fishing. Josh Quote
