  1. Thank you Mike for everything you've done, and every minute of your time you spent doing it.
  2. Fished for about an hour down stream from the planting, throwing a popper into what else but water willows. No takers but my favorite day on the water this year. Could not ask for a better day.
  3. You're not alone. I too went out this weekend and scored a big skunk-0. I threw many flies on Saturday on the Dupe with no interest from the fish. On the bright side I only treed one fly. Plenty of summer left.
  4. I highly recommend the stream sampling training. It's a great way to learn about aquatic life, and you'll be able to contribute to a great conservation effort. If you've got an aspiring young conservationist in your family with an attention span and an interest in aquatic life, this would be a great event to attend. Lots of looking at bugs under a microscope. Very cool stuff.
  5. Ronk summed it up pretty well. The class is essentially two parts. In part one you learn how to identify the invertibrates using a microscope. This is hands on, you have a microscope and examples of all the invertibrates in front of you. The second part of the class is learning the methods for collecting invertibrates from different types of river habitat. They also go over all the procedures necessary to make sure you're stream sampling is valid. The forms are pretty simple, and they reviewed the entire procedure in detail. I learned a lot about aquatic life in just few hours. It will be interesting to do some samplings when things warm up. Josh
  6. Brandon, Welcome to the ISA. I live on the Northside and it's good to see other city dwellers joining. We'll have to hook up this summer to hit some of the area rivers. Also as a bourbon dabbler, you might be interested to know that the guys Rip Van Winkle are going to be at Lush on Roscoe today (3/31) from 6 to 9, leading up to Whiskey Fest. I'll probably be there. You should also consider checking out the Flies of the ISA event this Saturday (4/4). It's a lot of fun, and a good way to meet many members. Josh
  7. OK, I'll bite. What's the difference between craft hair and craft fur? (Insert punchline here). But seriously, would a picture help show the difference. I think of craft hair as the stuff on the toy trolls from the 80's. Craft fur I think of as being crinklier. Craft hair comes in a patch, as if it were a hide (poor trolls), while craft fur comes hanked. Am I on the right track here?
  8. Great event as usual. Moving the food to the other room made the banquet hall seem much larger. Having Marc Miller there and taking questions was truly awesome.

    3 m minnow

Here you go. His videos are very well done. http://www.catching-shadows.com/catching-s..._3M_Minnow.html

Yes, the dubbing loop works the same with the Lite Brite as the ice dubbing. You just have to pull a little harder on the wad of material with the Lite Brite. I think it combs out better than the ice dubbing, but it is much more resitant, you definitely have the use velcro to tease the dubbing rather than any kind of dubbing brush, because the velcro will "let go" where the brush won't. For the record, I also tried some ice wing, because it was hanging next to the Lite Brite at the fly shop. I learned that you CANNOT spin ice wing in a dubbing loop. It just doesn't work, it's too long and stringy. It's cool looking material though. My fascination with shiny objects seems to be on the upswing.

    3 m minnow

All right. These are my first ever photo post, so if there are tips out there, I'm all ears. I tied some of these in olive in orange because I didn't have any white ice dub at the time. After I made it to the fly shop I tied a few up in white. The olive body is olive Lite-Brite, which I like better than regular ice dub. It's a little stronger and it has more interesting sparkle. The last one is tied on an offset worm hook and aluminum eyes, with the idea that the offset shank will be more likely to stay hook point up. Now I just need to get them in the water to see how they do when they're wet.

I tied a few of these last night. It's pretty fun to tie and they look good. I only had olive ice dubbing so I tied it up in olive and orange. I suppose it doesn't look much like a minnow, but is sure is pretty. So sparkly I thought about eating it myself, then I remembered I don't eat sparkly things.
  13. Thanks again to John for organizing, One More Cast for hosting, and Michael and Cory for instructing. It was a great way to get some exposure to one of the more intimidating fly tying techniques. Good job!
  14. I'm in for a shift. My schedule looks pretty open for that weekend, but I'll check the home calendar and let you know for sure tomorrow at the Deer Hair class.
  15. That's one of the reasons all fly recipes start with, "Pinch down the barb"
  16. I think there is scientific evidence connecting the tying of top water flies to an early arriving spring.
  17. That's a good motivator, thanks for putting it up Mike. I have to agree with Michael T, the CAFO's are a product of the demand for cheap food down at the Jewel. There comes a time when you have spend your money (and sometimes extra money) in such a way that your consumption lines up with your ideals.
  18. Is this event taking the place of the "Flies of the ISA" all day tying event? I noticed there isn't one on the calendar.
  19. Thanks Norm, I enjoyed that. "Time has no meaning in such a place as I was in." I'm going to print this on a t-shirt to wear while fishing. Then I won't have to say a word when I get home a couple of hours later than I said I would when I left to go fishing. Josh
  20. I've put off learning deer hair skills for quite some time. This would be a good opportunity to learn. Count me in.
  21. Great pictures. I am definitely adding this to my winter project list. I think the lanyard may be THE most overpriced thing at the flyshop. It's always more satisfying to use gear you made yourself.
