Lures for the Fox

Recommended Posts

I don't fish the Fox often enough, so i don't really know what is the best lure for fishing for smallies. Could someone please let me know what you have success with. Thanks

"Best" is kind of subjective and water/weather conditions will dictate lure choices. Are you asking about summertime conditions, normal water levels? Also do you use spinning gear, baitcasting gear, fly gear or other. Can you be more specific? It will help us give you better information.

I plan on using spinning gear in the fox river this summer. I also in the processes of upgrading the line on my reel., it's been a while. Do you recommend braided or monofilament line and what weight and diameter do you recommend.

Braided is probably a better choice as you can get a higher pound test with a thinner more manageable diameter product. As far as brands go... original power pro, suffix 832, berkley X9, fins and YGK are the brands most people recommend. 15 pound test in braided line is about the same diameter as 4 pound mono (depending on the braid brand). This will probably be the most versatile. I've been using 20 pound braid but when I run out I'll probably drop to 15 on my spinning gear.

Thanks for the advice on braided line. I have used it on the rig I fish with up in the Finger Lakes of New York, so I just switched it on the rig I will use on the Fox.

Do you recommend live bait, crank bait, plastic worms,, etc.

Here are my Fox River favorites. Scale up or down to best match your rod and reel combo, line, and expertise. There are multiples per category. Swipe left to see them all.

At present, I’m carrying spinnerbaits and topwater. Fishing spinnerbaits around edges in current when the water is higher, topwater over and around shallow rock bars during more “normal” flow. Occasionally I’ll throw a buzzbait alongside a bridge piling or rock wall. I don’t fish many plastics as I’m too lazy to carry an anchor or too impatient to use it. I’m like my kayak-fishing on the go.

Stick with Eric's advice - he's the most successful Fox angler I've seen!

Unlike Eric, I tend to lean into plastics. My go-to is a stick bait ( 3 inch Yum Dinger, or Stiko), Texas rigged, with 1/16 oz.  Bullshot.  That said, I don't encounter anywhere near the size of smallies he routinely gets. I do get numbers, however.
