Jim J
Canton-area residents are still celebrating after winning an eight-year battle to halt the proposed North Canton coal strip mine – successfully protecting Fulton County communities and their right to clean water. The proposed strip mine would have degraded a 1,000 acre landscape while polluting Canton Lake, endangering the drinking water supply for more than 20,000 local residents. That this ill-conceived mine was seriously considered for so long calls into question the validity of the Illinois mining permit process. Especially when the owners of this proposed mine had violated the Clean Water Act more than 600 times at their Industry Mine.Congratulations to the Canton Area Citizens for Environmental Issues!
