  1. Was looking to try and find some deeper water on the Fox....does anyone know if the Silver Springs area is wadeable/fishable? I'm not looking for any specifics, just want to know before I make the drive down. Also, would the Dayton USGS gauge be the best reflection of this section of river? Any info would be appreciatted...PM would be fine if you don't want to post it. Thanks, Tim

  2. My Dad and I used to fish the Kankakee in a 12' V-hull with a 9.9 on it and never had a problem going upstream, at times we would even be loaded down with camping gear and firewood...during low water there was an occasion or two that I would have to get out and drag the boat. Depending on where you are going to launch from,(we used to launch from the public launch down river from the state park, on the south side of the river. There is a number to it, I'm sure Norm could provide it in one creek of the knee) the Kankakee has a pretty decent channel that if you stay in the channel you shouldn't have any problems with a 15' jonn boat. It should only take a trip or two and a decent depth finder to learn where the channel is, go slow to save the prop until you get a good idea of where you need to be. From the recent pictures I've seen on here it looks like visibility is pretty good on the Kank and that should help if you have a spotter up front to help guide your way.

I would say the Dupe is a no go with a boat of that size, but it would also work well on the Fox.

If your ever looking for a partner, I would love to fish the K3 from a boat again and would be more than willing to show you a few spots.

  3. I almost forgot. I was in town (rockford) last night for a scout meeting for my oldest and I was talking to a couple guys and one of them said that he saw on the news or read that someone called the police about a problem with tracks and the railway was contacted about it twenty minutes before the accident. Anybody know anything about this? Absolutley tragic if it is a truism.

I have seen several news report that were saying the same thing.....the tracks were reported washed out and they did not stop the train.

  4. Well that kinda ruins my Saturday plans....

    Ron,

Give me a call if your still interested in picking me up in the morning and we will hit blackhawk and a few other spots.

Anyone else still interested in meeting up? Send me a PM and I'll let you know what the plan is(but I probably won't be back on until around 9pm tonight)...we will most likely be starting somewhere between the towns of St. Charles and South Elgin on the Rte 31 side.

  5. new e-mail address for me is:

    gstockey@att.net

    I'm comcast free!

    Gregg

Let me know how that works out for you....as much as I absolutely despise Comcast, ATT has been very bad in my area with outtages and constantly having to reboot the box. I am waiting until the several people I know that have ATT can go a month without having them come out and fix it to switch.

  6. I haven't heard from him. I have a follow up voice mail in to Don. I'll email him this evening. I suggest the Sand Piper on the west side of Rte. 59 approx. 3 miles north of Rte. 38.

Make sure someone calls to make sure the Sand Piper is open. It has closed a couple of times in the last year due to ownership changing and various other issues.

  7. Thanks for the comments guys! I will definately keep working them and see what happens. Let me tell you that I have been super impressed with the Big Hammer Swimbaits....I would say close to 80% of the fish I have caught this spring has been on different colored swimbaits worked in different ways. Including when I lost the skirt on the only spinnerbait I had with me while wading, I put a white swimbait on and was catching just as many as the guys who had the skirted spinnerbaits.

The itch is growing by the minute as I sit here at work reading all this good stuff and seeing the wonderful weather outside. Good luck to all who get out this weekend!

  8. Yet, very rarely do you see the question come up, "How do I work a Swimjig?" What if they won't commit to a strike? etc..

I would like to add the above question to this conversation...I ordered some of Jonn's swimjigs a couple weeks back and have had ZERO luck with them. I am using the Big Hammer trailers and kept letting my buddy use the Big Hammer jig heads while I used Jonn's swimjigs. He has been completely outfishing me and I have been switching to the Big Hammer Jigs and catching fish. I tend to believe I am just not fishing them correctly... I have been slow retrieving them, fast retrieving and bottom bouncing them. Any advise woudl be greatly appreciatted!
