Thanks. those guys look like they could be rock musicians. I spent a day in Key West about 20 years ago. It was interesting, but very touristy and didn't quite have the character they are portraying in this film.

Sweet! I always thought those medalists On a fenwick ff series where classy looking. How loud is it?
It looks totally sweet, I have it on a FF755 that I think is the older one with the translucent orange blank.
A little louder than Battenkills. But I don't have line on it. I think line will muffle it some.

This is what the butterstick I saw in person looked like a month or so ago at Sierra trading post. It was a discontinued model. I don,t know if there was one prior.

Sorry Rob, I got it wrong. It's a different model. It's the trailblazer.
I saw the 4wt Butterstick in person the older one. It was very short and slow action, but very nicely made.
I saw the new Fenwick Fenglass, which is now discontinued. They were nice too.

Rich, I thought most of those Redington Buttersticks came in a sort of creamy yellow color, or am I wrong? This particular glass blank that I built on is a fairly bright orange and was recommended by an acquaintance that is knowledgeable on glass rods/blanks. There are a ton of glass blanks out there but according to him, most of course are made in China, and the few made in the US, go for really big dollars, like those Steffen Bros. blanks. I'm not willing to spend almost $300 on just the blank if I can't cast the finished rod beforehand. Yours truly, The Frugal Flyrodder
The buttersticks were a black and off white with 70's retro logos. Sierra trading post had them for $150 a month or so ago. i saw a 4wt in the store.
I think they changed the color to some outlandish flouro scheme.

Mark, not sure about the 7 1/2 ft but the 8 ft 6 wt Fenwick glass was extremely common. Can't believe they're going for that much old and abused.

John, I knew you were a big proponent of glass for smallies but didn't realize you had acquired a bunch of both newer and older rods. Have you ever owned or cast a Steffen 8 ft. 5/6 weight, many of the glass guys rave about that particular rod?
My 2 glass rods that I've been chasing Smallies with are both 8 ft. 5 wt. but fairly fast actions for S glass.
I did a sold search. There are some going for less. But yeah anything old goes for a. good buck today.
So I wonder. If it's desirable to have faster action glass rods wouldn't slower action graphite rods accomplish the same thing. Remember the Fenwick eagle rods, they had green and gold wraps.
These old st. Croix rods too. LOL I bet this whole outfit sold new for $150.

Greatly enjoying a borrowed vintage Fenwick FF756 but only in ponds. I have not caught a smallie with one. Judging by the fight a bluegill puts up it would be a blast.
My goal is to find a rod that would ride the fence between bass and bluegills. One to keep in the car all the time. This is comming close.
I'm not sure if Fenwick had a FF765 or if this is a typo. But I copied and pasted from Fly Fish Ohio and this fits the description.
Fenwick FF765
A 7 ½ foot, 3 ounce, two-piece rod for a six weight line. This is a most decidedly “unglass-like” glass rod. It has a crisp, fast action that is the equal of any mid-flex or medium action graphite rod in my collection. It has a unique tapered grip, a design proprietary to Fenwick. This Fenwick also features properly sized guides for modern fly lines. There is a reason the Fenwick glass rods are among the most collectible in the industry. In their time, they were one of the best-designed and most effective fly rods available – and they still are!
I like this rod for use in my canoe. It may fly against popular opinion, but I believe use of a long fly rod “to keep the back cast off the water when fishing from a low canoe or float tube” is a fallacy. If your back cast is hitting the water a few casting lessons, and not a longer rod, is the best solution. The Fenwick FF765 matches very nicely with a Pflueger 1494½ reel and a 6-weight double taper line. The manageable length of the Fenwick makes casting in small, brushy streams a delight. The quick action and strong butt section means even the most feisty smallmouth can be subdued.

The state of Illinois already owns a large parcel approximately a mile up from the confluence of the Mazon and Illinois river (Morris Wetlands), They offer no access for taking out by kayak or canoe. My guess is the state is pressured from county government to limit access, and the county is influenced by large land owners like the ones named in the lawsuit.
I was told that stretch is off limits because it's a nesting area for birds.

Holy cow, that's terrible. SUPER nice guy.

Something along this line is pretty cool. He says to use 6/0 thread and body hair. I used gsp and belly hair. Belly hair is more hollow so it floats more.
He says:
This is a relatively small deer hair bug. I would recommend using deer body hair rather than deer belly or elk hair. Deer body hair will pack much tighter in the small space allowed for the collar and head because it's not as coarse.
you do you.

Attached is link to ABA Journal article entitled "Troubled Waters" that outlines the current battle between the publics' river access rights and landowner's rights in Illinois. The article references the Dupage River landowner issue as well as a lawsuit involving the Mazon River in Grundy County entitled Holm vs. Kodat, in which the Illinois Third District Appellate Court upheld a Grundy County trial court ruling adverse to river access rights . Also attached is a copy of the Holms Third District Case. The Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to take up and hear this case and it is currently under a briefing schedule with oral argument date to be set. This case will dictate public access rights to Illinois rivers for years to come absent legislative intervention which will be difficult at best. The Will County Forest Preserve District has filed an Amicus Brief in support of river access rights in the current Holms Supreme Court case. The ISA is looking into doing this as well and I will keep you posted on developments on this issue. Please let me know your thoughts on this important issue that could significantly impact Illinois Smallmouth fishermen, kayakers and outdoorsmen for years to come.
I got to thinking about this after the fact. With regard to the Mazon, does any of this really matter? I may be wrong, but even if you can legally be in the river, there is no place to park.

Deer hair packer (Fugly) , Whiting Farms Bugger Packs- Olive and brown, a whopper popper and a Berkley Line counter. Several Cabelas - Bass Pro cards, of which I am thinking about spending on a Garmin Striker 4 for my Sylvania trips.
Oh, and a Yeti tumbler/ coffee cup- in olive green. Just so people know I am a serious outdoors guy. Actually my youngest bought me that on his own. I thought that was pretty cool.
My wife's side of the family is tech savy and they came up with a website called "CheckedTwice". It's basically a gift registry linked to amazon or whatever the place on the web the item is found.
At first I was like "well that's pretty commercial" , but now I think it's great. The stuff I put on there is not super expensive and it's pretty cool to get stuff you can actually use. Once you get everyone on board it works really well.

Oh it's a thing. I made the investment earlier this year. I caught the trout bug a few years ago after visiting my oldest at school in CO. All my ultralight or light stuff was broken or uber old. Picked up a good rod for like $80 from Ali. The reel was a bit more......but I made an investment in a good reel and spool after doing some research. This lets the reel function for both smallies or bfs trout depending on the spool I pop in. If I do invest more it'll probably be another rod, something ultralight for small streams.
Sometimes the JDM market can be cheaper than the USDM depending on the product. The one thing that did change in the last year was shipping. It can be a bit ridiculous now due covid.
That JDM stuff is shiny and pretty, it's like shoes and jewelry for fisherman lol!
Seriously tho, some good finds can be had if that's your thing.
Would be cool to have a baitcaster where you could throw unweighted soft plastics a bit farther.
-
I didn't know this was thing. A baitcast system developed in Japan to throw really light lures. I won't be investing in this even though I love fishing for bluegills and crappies. I have way too much stuff already.. None the less I thought it was interesting. This is a good overview.
Bait Finesse System (finesse-fishing.com)
So a reel differs in that the spool is much lighter, often drilled and has a large arbor so it doesn't have much line capacity. I think the idea is so that does not require a lot of force at the beginning of a cast.
There are a zillion videos on YT , many reviews. They sell lots of this stuff on Amazon- pretty cheap. There is way more on alieexpress. If it's made there is probably a review on YT.
The JDM (Japan Domestic Market) gear is really expensive.
Anyway, I thought it was kind of interesting.

Yeah it is a shock. I talked to him a couple times at shows. He was nice.
I bought this book when it came out in about 1990. There is a few pages dedicated to the Minnesota Smallmouth alliance and conservation. Remember thinking, yeah that's a great idea.

On a similar note of unethical behavior. We have a county lake here with a 10hp limit. Many years ago, I'm not sure if it still holds, a Mercury 10 hp and a 15 hp outboard motor were of the exact same size. The only difference between the 2 was the way it was carburated. Well guys were buying a 15 hp and the girl who had a Sign Shop just down the street from the marina, had the Merc 10 hp decal down perfect. Many guys were having her produce one and slapped it on their 15's. The owner of the marina told me if the DNR ever looked under the cowling of those motors entering the lake, you would hear men crying from all the way to his place a few miles away. Ha
I am not a boat person but I remember hearing about 9.9s being under rated by the manufacturer for hp.

Does it make sense to allow a 10 or 15 hp motor to run along fully open and not allow my 50 hp to run at no wake ? I can guarantee you that it's the 10 hp that will be more destructive to the shoreline and likely dump more contaminants into the water. I for one wish that all lakes that have horse power limits would allow for no wake of larger motors. And if the DNR see a larger motor not abiding by the rules, I hope they nail him to the wall so as not to close opportunities for other more conscientious fishermen.
I think the OP is more concerned about an increase in pressure on an already crowded lake. That would be a downer especially if you live real close.

I did go to southernmost point which is in that film. There were some bona fide "beach bums" hanging around offering to take your picture. Think "the Dude" only less hygienic. So I handed the guy my totally manual Nikon SLR. It's really old school. No autofocus or exposure. He was actual a little insulted when I tried to explain how to set the camera. To my suprise the pic was perfectly exposed and pin sharp.
I remember going to the bar Hemingway used to hang out in. Chickens walking around in the street, if I remember right that was on Duvall Street also in the film.
