from what I've seen of the bank to bank staining of the creek, yes, they should be able to do a better job . there should be some sort of filtering that can be done .

Tim Horton is one of a very small of group of TV fishing shows that I have watched more than once since I've been laid up .

Back when we held the banquet in Wilmington one year we had a roundtable discussion of club members instead of a paid speaker . As I recall it was quite well received .

I believe the lineup included Jonn, Ken Grotowski, Phil Fiscella , myself and possibly Pete Plauck . There could have been someone else , I can't remember .

Would something like that be feasible these days or is a "name draw" absolutely necessary to sell tickets ? Save the speaker's fees for conservation work ?

Surely a mixed group with different experiences ie small water, bigger water, fly fishing, kayak/canoe, noted for different techniques or different rivers could be found . Have them all speak on how they would approach different situations and open it up to questions from the audience .

You could either give the group the questions in advance to prepare or spring it on them cold . I think the latter would be more interesting . Shoot you could even raffle off the chance to ask one of the questions to the audience. More dough for conservation work and then no one knows in advance what would be asked. You could also raffle off the chance to have a question for the group answered in upcoming issues of the newsletter .

Phil Fiscella, Mark Kasik, Jim Alexander and myself would meet for breakfast at Bakers Square in Bradley for breakfast and fish later throughout the winter . We met there because Mark and Jim came south and Phil came north and it was usually too cold to sit around a parking lot in the state park . Gary Lange also got involved a bit later.

It was interesting to see heads start craning our way from other patrons when we started talking fishing . You could always count on Phil to bring some paper/pens and start drawing diagrams that related to his ideas. I always got the feeling that some of those other folks would have loved to join in .

I think the most we ever had was 13 or 14 guys, turned out that was a few too many .

So far as I know that was the origin of the Breakfast Club . Always enjoyed those meetings .

I can't recall a single time when there was not fishing afterward . The other guys drove too far just to look at me over breakfast .

I had a couple eddies by Area 7 at the K3 state park covered in oil . you could see it oozing out of the ground into the water. I got the IDNR involved and with the IDNR Area Manager and Site Super met the EPA guy and took him to the scene He took some samples, gave us some sterile bottles to take samples ourselves if it expanded .

He then told us that it wasn't a big enough problem to warrant further action on the EPA's part .

That that got me a bit upset would somewhat of an understatement . It takes a lot to make me get that mad but he managed to do it . I called some legislative assistants to state level reps that I had got to know . What they found out made me madder . Seems that the oil was likely coming from the Shell Oil pipeline spill that had already been settled by various Govt agencies, Shell and local folks affected . There was no way to go back after them, hence the attitude of the EPA guy that it wasn't a big enough problem . Looking back, I realize I should have tried to raise public concern and maybe enough political pressure would have got something done.

After a rain you can still see oil seeps coming out of the limestone ledges to this day here and there on the river .

Keep at them, send this to the Outdoor Notebook , maybe Bob will give it some space . Check with the various free pubs you see around bait shops like Heartland Outdoors , send it to them . You can send it to Midwest Outdoors but it has been my experience that they don't print anything from groups that haven't "bought" space from them . Send it to every newspaper in your area big or small. same with TV/radio/web outlets

Also send it to Outdoor News it's a tabloid style periodical that usually has booths at the various fishing shows .

Send it to every municipality and/or local governmental unit i.e. forest preserves and the like that could be affected .

Well all that likely won't have groups chanting in the streets of Chicago that the whole world is watching, maybe it will raise enough ire to get something done .

Well , he is doing one hell of a job .

I still wish they had used Zach's one on one . A teenager speaking eloquently about the importance of the river.

Patty donated a copy to the Kankakee Community College library, I believe if you pay a small fee you can get a KCC library card and check it out .

I knew Mike for a long time . He was an experienced and knowledgeable wader . His death has made me stop and think, if it can happen to him , it can happen to me .

I have decided to try to be even more careful than I have been for decades .

I would remind all to respect the power of moving water , take it slow and easy . Listen to that little voice in your head, any doubts, don't do it .

I'll bet they would. When I first saw them I had quite a bit of line out in the hole where they were. I just froze up at first, then figured I better get my Jude Bug reeled in before they got to it. They were pretty fearless. I wish I had a better camera at times like this. I watched them, and they watched me for a good ten minutes.
