Wisconsin river help

Heading up to Eagle river next week thought I'd take a few days to get there. Any suggestions of places to hit the Wisconsin River on the way up or good smallmouth lakes? Taking the canoe and waders. I need something fairly tame since I'm taking the wife along. Also any interesting sights like largest ball of twine?

Stretches north of Merrill are good for a canoe and jumbo smallies. Several boat launches along 107 and the only real fast water is below the dams. I have been doing very well on a small jig with craw trailer.
