  1. We had a very good Quad City chapter meeting Sunday evening April 11. About 40 people attended. About 25 were members from the Hawkeye Fly Fishing club. 15 were existing or prospective ISA members. Signed up three new members, (applications and checks are in the mail). Karen Rivera, Illinois DNR, spoke for 45 minutes regarding the surveys last summer on the Middle Mississippi Tributaries and Green River watershed. Karen also reviewed the 2008 Rock River smallmouth bass survey. Karen also spoke a bit about the 2009 fish kill on the Rock River. Mike Jacobs demonstrated tying a new smallmouth fly. Meeting lasted about two hours.

We plan to have several joint meetings each year to jointly recruit new presenters. The Hawkeye Fly Fishing club was a most gracious host and good to work with. Next winter we will try to schedule several fly tying meetings with the Hawkeye Fly Fishing club to focus on SMB flies.

Prior to our meeting Dave Jones, Ron Price and Matt Schroeder fished the Duck Creek tributary for several hours. A handful of SMB were caught, the largest being 16 1/2 inches by Ron.

  6. Just for the record. The Western Region choose August 15 for their Maquoketa River outing last May. Just didn't get around to posting it on the calendar until this week. We selected August 15 because that date worked best for the two trip coordinators. Nonetheless we will keep other scheduled trips in mind when we plan for future outings.

  7. Ron,

I'm glad you were able to participate in the survey. I was hoping to participate on Thursday, sounds like they were ahead of schedule. Karen Rivera from the IDNR will be sharing with me later this month the survey schedule for Mississippi River tributaries south of the quad cities. I will keep the western region posted regarding that survey effort.

  8. Attention ISA members,

I have received information from Karen Rivera of the IDNR regarding dates and locations for the Green River Basin sampling. Sampling and surveying will take place each day from Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 16. 8 different locations will be sampled from Walnut to Geneseo. Volunteers are welcome to assist their efforts. Volunteers need to commit to a date and location so that IDNR officials can keep in touch should there be any changes in their schedule. If you are interested please let me know and I can share information with you directly via e-mail.

    Thanks, Dave Jones

  9. Ron P and I fished the Maquoketa River Saturday which replaced the Green River trip that was cancelled. The Maquoketa was in good shape, water level and flow were normal. We floated the first half of the catch and release section just below the Delhi Dam. Fishing was good early and late, but tough mid day. Between the two of us we caught about 10 smallmouth, but nothing huge. Looking forward to catching more as we learn the river. This was the first official Western Region outing. We will continue to search for new rivers in the Western Region.

We will likely chose another outing in July to replace the Rock River trip for the Western Region guys. We will keep you posted.

Check for postings after the 4th of July regarding smallie hunter outings. Our first one will be Duck Creek, date and time to be determined later.
