Paul,
Good report. I was vacationing with my family in the area ( Apple Canyon Lake) and couldn't make it for your outing Saturday. Did fish the park and section by the Scout camp Friday morning with my son in law. Between the two of us we caught about 20. I fished the Scout camp section again early this morning and caught another 7. Caught the smallmouth at the park using large plastics. Used small plastics down by the Scout camp section.
Fished the Apple Canyon Lake Saturday for bluegills and did real well. Had a good bluegill fry Saturday evening.

5 members (Dave J, Paul T Sr, Deb C., Rich V & Don Z) met at the Park at 8:00 Saturday for the June QC Region outing. Weather was mostly overcast and no crowd when we started. We fished the catch & release area in the park during the morning. Some did fish near the Scout Camp in the afternoon. Had most of our luck in the park. Numbers were not great but size was good. Dave and Deb each caught several over 17-18". It was great to catch such good size SMB. Water clarity was not good which may explain why we did not catch many outside the park.
Thanks to all those who joined our outing.

Sounds good. I will bring my canoe and will fish with Alberto. I will try to join the group for breakfast. I will defer to you and Jonn to assign sections of the river for our float.
Thanks, Dave

I was wondering what condition the Kishwaukee is in. I am thinking of coming over if river conditions are good. Jude or Paul could you let me know?
Thanks, Dave J

Sorry folks,
Mother nature just won't give us a break this summer. Between the Delhi Dam failure and the constant rains, the outing for August 21 must be cancelled. Water levels too high, flow rates too fast and clarity is poor. I hope to check out the Maquoketa later this fall to see how much damage the dam failure has caused.

Thanks to Paul for allowing the QC region to make up our Apple River outing today with the Rockford chapter. 12 participants, 6 from the QC region and 6 from either the Rockford or Chicago region. Several caught in excess of 30 each. A fine day in spite of the heat and bright sun light.

Going to be near Mendota late this week. Looking to fish (weather permitting) the South Branch of the Kishwaukee south of DeKalb this Friday. Can any one help me out with access location directions for a wade trip? Not sure where there is either public or permitted access. You can private message me if you prefer.

Because of high water, fast flows and poor visibility we will postpone the Quad City region outing scheduled at Apple River for this Sunday, June 27. Instead we will join the Rockford region at Apple River on Sunday, July 18. Because this is skinny water participation may be limited. Please contact Paul Trybul 815-703-2651 or Dave Jones 563-299-2759 to RSVP.

One good thing about the Apple is it does have the ability to drop back to normal levels quicker than most IL rivers. If you do have to reschedule, keep in mind that I have a NW regional wading trip scheduled for July 18th on the Apple. I've only had 2 RSVP's for my trip so far so if you want to have a combined region trip, that could work.
Thanks Paul, We may join you if we reschedule. Have you fished the Apple this year yet? I have once, the first Friday of June and had decent luck

With recent rains, gage height and discharge flow is high. I will speak with the park ranger later this week to check river conditions. If necessary we will reschedule this event for July. I will post an update by Thursday evening.

Dan Sallee (ISA member and DNR manager) and I joined 5 other DNR employees in conducting surveys at Apple River State park today. Recent rains prevented us from surveying the South Fork Apple River first thing this am because water levels were too high. We surveyed Clear Creek where it joins with the Apple River at the east end of the park. We used electric seine stations to stun and net the fish. We collected smb, trout, white fish, chubs, minnows & etc. During breaks we counted, measured & weighed the fish before release. The DNR staff was pleased with the counts and creek conditions. It was neat to see the recent bank improvements (funded by ISA) holding good numbers of smb and trout. Rains after lunch prevented our efforts to conduct another survey on the Apple with the park. I had hoped to take pictures during the afternoon session but missed out with the rain. This group will be surveying other rivers and creeks in NW ILL tomorrow thru next Tuesday, let me know if you are interested in helping.
During July this DNR group will be surveying the Mackinaw near Bloomington and Spoon near Peoria. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. Assisting with surveys is a great way to learn from the DNR about river conditions and habitat that hold smb.

The Illinois DNR will be conducting surveys on tributaries in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. The following rivers will be surveyed from June 14 through June 22; Carroll Creek, Plum River, South Fork Apple River, Apple River, Long Hollow Creek, Smallpox Creek, Rush Creek, Galena River and Menominee. If you have interest in volunteering to assist with the surveys please let me know and we can provide more detail and contact information. Currently the DNR will need volunteers to work the electric seine stations.

Mike,
Not alot. Karen really would not comment much in front of the group. Seems that DNR employess are careful not to be on record with any comments prior to a ruling. She did say that the railroad is claiming that most of the fish kill took place some 50 miles downstream from the spill. It takes time for ethanol to breakdown, but when it does, it depletes the oxygen content.

7 attended our outing today on the Apple River. The weather was great, overcast skies and no wind. Our results were good. Ron, Trevor & Alberto caught 40 SMB in the Park and by the Scout Camp. Dave & Bart caught 25 SMB near the Scout Camp. Paul Jr, Paul Sr & Issac caught 3 SMB in the Park and 25 SMB exploring the Fever north of the Park. Most were small (5 to 7 inches), not many in the 8 to 11 inch age class. We did catch a few in the 14 to 16 inch range. Last summer's heavy rains has certaintly altered the structure we were used to. All in all a pretty decent day. Thanks to all who attended.
