Congratulations!!

That sounds like alot of fun and a great idea, Jonn! I have lost my tolerance for winter also. I hope to take a southern river trip in the near future!

Are the less expensive Boga grips any good? I think berkley makes them among other brands. Are Boga Grips easier on the fish?
Bass Pro Shops makes a decent grip at a relatively low price. I own their basic model and a Cabela's model which weighs fish upto 15 lbs (not digital. I prefer the Bass Pro Shops version.

I have been as far west as Harrison. I know there are some good rivers in the area. Try the forums at www.ozarkanglers.com for information.

Fantastic work Norm! You prevented a certain tragedy.

My son and 3 friends found 3 abandoned kayaks on this trip. No bodies were found and no news reports of missing persons. It surprised them because it is a remote area with difficult terrain. Anyone who walked out of there did so because it was their only option.
The USGS gage downstream from this location is currently at 57 cfs. It was at 201 cfs on the day these pictures were taken. A few days ago it was at 5000 cfs and dropped to 100 cfs in approximately 24 hours. Notice the log wedged in the crack of this rock wall:

Welcome aboard Steve. Nice to see new member from Central Illinois...and a fellow hill-billy to boot!

I was thinking of trying that, but I believe that they are pumping water out at a very high rate from the spillway, which is where I assume you are implying. I don't know of any other areas to access the river, although I am sure the are smallies in some of the tributaries. of shelbyville lake. I was thinking more of the vermillion river or mackinaw or something in the champaign area.
You are correct. The Kaskaskia is running at a very high rate below Lake Shelbyville and has been for some time now. No other tribs have smallies to my knowledge. You might try Kickapoo Park on the Vermillion. They have canoe rentals if they have not shut down yet.

My son (Gabe) is one of three finalists in Sierra Designs (outdoor adventure clothing and equipment company) essay contest. The winner is determined by how many online votes they receive. Right now Gabe is in last place. He needs your vote...and the votes of your family and friends. Please take a minute and visit:

One vote per computer.
Thank you.

Nicely done Mike!
I was only able to participate in 2 ISA activities this year but they were both memorable. I attended my first Blowout and found it to be highly informative and entertaining (including the ride home). In April I attended the Central Region Outing on the Mighty Mack. My partner (Dana Lee) and I had never fished it before and we found it lived up to it's reputation. Above all I had the pleasure of meeting many others who share the same passion for Illinois streams and smallmouth. Many thanks to Tim Smith, Steve Jordan, and Jonn Graham of the Central Region for their excellent work!

Mark ,
There are a couple interesting thread going on at River Smallies related to this right now .
I saw that Norm. Some good info there. I am always learning more about things that I thought I already knew.

Interesting!! Good info, Norm!

I believe you are talking about the trip I posted. Jonn is correct, the guide's name is Mike Dial. You can reach him through www.tennesseebassguides.com His rates are reasonable and he will put you on fish. Let me know if you have any questions.

Kevin,
Personal knowledge; there are several in Shawnee National Forest at the southern end of the state. One of the larger ones is Belle Smith Springs which feeds Bay Creek. I would think that most streams have springs that help feed them but I am not an expert.
-
There are several spring-fed creeks in Illinois but I do not know the closest one to you.

Nice looking yak Dick. Congratulations! I have had my MR10 out twice and can't wait to get it wet again.
-
Awesome! I bet he will be a return customer!

Nice boat Mark...
Curious as to what size you bought and how long ago?
Seems Liquid Logic has now sold the Manta Ray line to Native Watercraft. One change I've noticed is that they list a Manta Ray 11 (instead of the Manta Ray 10) and have it listed at 10' 10" where before I thought the MR 10 was listed at 10' 2".
Al
Thanks Al. You are correct. I purchased a 2007 MR 10 from Appomatox River Company. They have them on sale for $550. Shipping was $50. Also bought a carbon/fiber paddle for $115. I bought the 10 for ease of transporting...just throw it in the back of the truck...but 12's have more room and more storage options.

I gave in to the dark side and joined the club. I do not have it rigged yet; probably will add a couple of rod holders, paddle leash, and wading line. I won't have an opportunity to use it for a couple of weeks and it is killing me!

Nice job Mike!

Paca Craws have been my primary bait for the past 3 years...now available at Gander Mountain.
Question about NW Illinois/Iowa/Wisconsin Driftless Area
in Open Discussion
Posted
I am looking to fish the NW Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin area in the near future. I am looking for access where I can wade fish with my old dog. I have not been to NW Illinois / Iowa in 50 years and have never been to SW Wisconsin but I understand the smallmouth fishing is excellent. Without revealing specific locations, would anyone be willing to provide information on which streams to focus on?
My dog has had both rear ACL's repaired but he still loves to fish.
