  1. Those classic streamers will catch smallies but they work best with an active retrieve. Plus they are durable & easy to tie - that doesn't keep them out of trees or stuck in deep water rocks. Maybe I should try no bend plus no barb to correct for that.

So, you are suggesting making them and just leave out the hook?

  2. I recently was looking at tying some flies with some of the bucktail that i've acquired over the past months. I was looking at a Mickey Finn, but that seems to require red and yellow bucktail. Are other color combinations used with success, as in making other colors and still catch fish? Interested in input from anyone who has some experience in this area.

  3. Curious as to what has happened to the club members in the central part of the state. We used to have a number of events scheduled throughout the spring, summer and fall. Do we have a coordinator any longer? I drove across the Vermilion just south of Starved Rock and remembered learning about that area from club members on an outing. We still have had winter fly tying, but guess I have to use them on my own.

  4. I've been trying to close down my law practice, and had some springtime medical troubles so fishing has not been on my radar, but I was looking for a get-together to fish downstate, and see nothing. I know we have had our share of rain, and the Mac looks high, as does the Vermilion that I see at Pontiac. Is there any thought of a get together closer than the Kish? How about the Vermilion near Danville? Did we not schedule downstate events this year?

  5. Seems like several years ago I was reading about the virtues and vices of felt soled or rubber soled wading boots, and which were ecologically better, etc. Don't remember how that came down.

I'm needing some new boots and wonder if there's any suggestions of what's best. I'll be in MO for some trout this year a couple of times, but generally will be in Central IL looking for smallies most of the time.

Any suggestion of a all-around preference?

  6. We have a very skilled snow plow driver covering my street. He managed to open the door to my neighbor's mailbox, and just tore off the door to mine. I found it when the snow melted this past monday, rescued it to the garage, will wait to try to put it back on after this last 2+ inches melts away and it looks like we are in the clear for a while.
