Tim Smith
Water temperatures in Champaign County were well into the 60s this week. It won't be long before smallmouth bass are on the nests all over the state. Over the course of the year, the number of fish we will catch and release will number in the thousands. The fact that we catch and release and the skill we use to catch and release has a profound impact on smallmouth fisheries in the state. Now as we enter the most stressful time of year for our smallmouth populations, it's a good time to think about avoiding nesting males and using our best fish handling techniques to increase survival of broodstock and fry. Posted below are some of the peer-reviewed articles that show the effects of angling on stress reproductive success and stress responses in smallmouth bass. If you haven't had a chance to read the abstracts before, you might want to check them out. http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...LA%3E2.3.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...RA%3E2.3.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...AR%3E2.3.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...AF%3E2.3.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...TO%3E2.0.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...ML%3E2.0.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...BC%3E2.3.CO%3B2 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...=2&page=210 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...577%2FM03-149.1 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...=5&page=783 http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?reques...=1&page=121 http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nrc/...000011/art00022
