See What’s Making A Splash At the 2008 Fishing College

Get ready for a day of fun and learning at the 2008 Fishing College, presented by The Daily Journal and the Northern Illinois Anglers Association (NIAA). Doors open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 29. The event will be held at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds in Kankakee, IL. Stop by and visit one of our many exhibitors’ booths and visit our Angler and Interactive Zones to learn about a variety of topics related to the fishing industry.

This one-day event is free and open to the public and promises to have something for everyone - from the novice to the pro fisherman. Come out and see a Kankakee County Convention & Visitors Bureau Viewing Aquarium stocked with fish from the Kankakee River. Test yourself and see how many fish you recognize and start planning which one you’ll catch this spring. Come and see the McGovern winning Bling My Boat. What will $60,000 and 650 man-hours of labor do for a 12-year-old deck boat? Turn into a sleek, eyepopping machine anyone would be proud to won. If you didn’t have a chance to see Kevin and Chris McGovern prize winning boat at the Chicago Boat, RV and Outdoors Show in January make sure to see it at the 2008 Fishing College.

Learn from the avid fishermen in the Angler Zone. NIAA will speak about the 25th Anniversary of the Kankakee River Fishing Derby. Other presenters in the Angler Zone are Geno Alteiry of the Sportsman’s Edge in Braidwood, IL. Geno will be discussing “Crucial depths to fish at the Cooling Lakes.” Mike Bronson of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will be covering “Fishing Rules & Regulations.” Watseka Suzuki will be presenting keynote speaker local expert and fisherman Matt Mullady at 11:30 a.m. On the water or in the classroom, Matt has instructed thousands to become more productive anglers. With an average of 1,200 smallmouths swimming in the Kankakee River per year, Mullady will eliminate the guesswork through proper instruction for catching multiple river species.

Explore the Interactive Zone. Certified Fly Fishing instructor Donna Smith will present a ladies-only program for fly fishing, followed by Mike Clifford of the Illinois Smallmouth Alliance presenting, “History and Heritage of the Kankakee River.” In the afternoon there will be a beginner series that is great for children. Members of the NIAA and local fisherman Ken Munjoy of The Daily Journal will cover the “Basics of Fishing,” “Casting for Beginners” and “Common Fishes of Illinois.”

Get your boat ready for the fishing season with tips from L&G Marine. The guys from L&G Marine will be going over some of the things you need to do to prepare your boat and trailer for this year’s fishing season.

Test your skills in the L&G Marine Children’s Casting Contest and Blain’s Farm & Fleet Adult Casting Contest.

If you enjoy fishing you don’t want to miss this event!
