  2. DNR will close 11 parks on Nov. 1

    BY JEFF LAMPE

    As part of a cost-saving measure, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has announced it will close 11 parks as of Nov. 1 and will lay off 39 workers.

    “The sites will close their doors on Nov. 1,” said Chris McCloud, a DNR spokesman. “We knew this was a possibility at DNR. The budget the governor got was $2.1 billion underfunded.

    “This is a tough day. I think it’s important to understand these are not decisions we wanted to make.”

    Parks that have been slated for closing include the following:

    * Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park

    * Illini State Park near Marseilles

    * Wolf Creek State Park

    * Castle Rock State Park, Oregon

    * Lowden State Park, Oregon

    * Hidden Springs State Forest, Strasburg

    * Channahon Parkway State Park, Channahon

    * Gebhard Woods State Park, Morris

    * Kickapoo State Park, Oakwood

    * Moraine View State Park, Leroy

    * Weldon Springs State Park, Clinton

    “We still have over 300 state parks and conservation areas we hope people will still enjoy,” McCloud said. “And those sites remain open free of charge.”

    The 39 workers to be laid off include: 25 site technician II, 4 rangers, 3, site assistant superintendents, 1 office associate (part-time), 3 office coordinators (2 part-time, 1 full-time), 1 site security officer (IFPE union), 1 natural resource coordinator and 1 natural resource specialist.

  3. I found his article on the prairie state outdoors website and thought id share it ... I dont like the idea of dam building as a "fun time" it throws a lot of things out of wack in the waterway..

    ..Here is a quote from Jeff Lampe the man who made the video..

    "Plus, we only dammed one half of the creek: the other side was still free flowing. Personally, I don’t see small dams on half a stream as a real problem."

    he states that "they only built a dam half way across the creek and the other side was free flowing"...look at the video looks like it goes all the way across.

    If we find one of these "fun time dams" should we tear it down or leave it be?

  4. I-57 crosses the Middle Fork south of Paxton, Mile Post 58 or so. I haven't caught any smallies this far up. I am told, back in the day, that there were once good populations. The farthest upstream where I have caught decent smallies (around 14 inches) was in the area of the Middle Fork County Park north of Penfield.

    As for the Kankakee (I grew up on that river, fishing it since I was about 8 years old with my dad, and it drives me nuts when I hear it called the "Kank"), thar be smallies up and down from the 57 bridge, if you know what to look for...basic stuff like rip-rap, concrete retainer walls, docks, etc. But, you're gonna need a boat.

    I have had mixed feelings about fishing in the middle fork around Paxton. I think im going to try out this year.

    I have also got permission from one land owner to fish the embress river south of Champaign. I was down there sunday and saw a couple fish just not shure what they were..I reckon Ill find out soon>>>> B)

  5. Wade, are those bead chain eyes? They add some nice flash, good work!

    Yes Rob those are bead chain eyes...I got to looking around the house for something else and ran across the chain :rolleyes: I cant remember what I was lookin for...My Dad has been catching a lot of trout and smallies in Tennessee in the last couple weeks, Im going to send him one to try...
