I always try to make sure that I have some fly line outside the rod tip. It just lets me ready to fish. I then will pass the leader down and around the reel hooking the fly to one of the guides where depends on the length of the leader. This practice will always means you are ready to fish. I don't always start with a fresh leader but what I will do cut the leader back a bit and Tie on a new piece of tipet material. Carl.

I have been trying to remember the last time I had a fly line coil up. I have had lines crack, loops pull out, or just get dirty. Now what I have had to stretch are mono leaders, hand made and pre made tapered leaders. It didn't seem to matter what brand they all have some memory from being coiled up on a reel, or in the package it came in. It was no big deal to attach the leader to a tree branch and give it a good stretch with a good steady pull. Their is one thing I always try to do is clean my fly line whenever I fish and I may clean the line more than once depending on water condition, dirty water = dirty fly line. Take a old sock and make yourself a cleaning kit. I like glide ,the 3M cleaners for fly lines even some pads. Carl

I've been tying on tubes for a few years, most fly patterns can be adjusted to a tube. Leach patterns, streamers , spey style and even nymphs can be tied on tube , plastic or metal. I've caught Smallies, Largemouth, Steelhead a lot of Steelies and Browns and Salmon. You can change the size and style of hooks. Kevin Feenstra and his guide service are the way to go. He uses some very interesting patterns, probably a interesting learning experience. Also using 2hander a man after my own heart. Spey your Steelhead. :-) CarlB

Well depending on how much rain it should bring some more Steel into the Lake Michigan Tribs. This is the time to be going, unless the rivers get blow out. They will not stay high. Only time will tell, but higher flows is what draws the fish in. CarlB

I'm a big fan of casting big flies, but not necesarly waited very heavy. My go to rod is a 8 wt. usually but have used a 6 wt. and a 7 wt. . I'm always looking for different lines to try more than rods. On my 8 wt. I use a Rio verstip, with the intermetate and type 3 head I use a lot.For my 7 wt. I have a few different lines I use floater to a Teeny sink tip and ful sinking lnes. the 6 wt. a TT and a Mastery with a 12' type 3 sink tip. What I use depends on water conditions and type of flies I will be using, not a big fan of casting a lot of weighted flies unless I have to. I would much rather use a weighted line and a unweighted streamer. Carl

I usually like the 7'er but have been know to fish a 8'er. When fish some of the smaller spring creeks I see no benefit in the use of a longer flyrod. I'll shorten up my leader a little, and make the tippet a little heavier and I'm good to go. Now where the creeks are a little more wide open a longer rod will keep the fly up above the vegatation, I have been fishing the Driggs on all types of creeks and rivers with no problems. Carl

Hi ron it is a 7' 2" PHY Driggs 4/5 wt. taper, it's got some very good trout mojo, and it's the pertect lenght for the Driftless area. A few years back another club which I belong to had a bamboo rod building class. I'm really happy with how the rod turned out. It has a parabolic action and roll casts like a demon. I have started another rod but still have to finish that one, it's a PHY 7' 6" perfectionist 4 wt. which I hope will be another excelent riftless area rod. I was in the Driftless area thursday, and Friday. I did very well , lots of 10"-12" Browns, with a couple of larger browns on but were able shake free. Most of the Browns came on Dries , with a few came on a beadhead Baetis pattern. most of the streams are pretty over grown, which is best, I think the trout stay more active in those streams , because they see less preasure.
