  1. Our camping spot got cancelled for this weekend due to high water. Can anyone suggest anything 3-4 hours away from the Chicago suburbs for a camping spot near some fishable water? WI possibly? Have fly rod, will travel. Thanks! Chris Serafin
  2. Sorry, I have to bail. Girlfriend wants to float the Fox and camp overnight. No idea how the water will be, but I'm not going to tell her no. I get out every week and weekend, so I'm sure we'll all meet up soon enough.
  3. I somehow have a reminder on my calendar for an ISA tying event at Dupage Fly Company for Tuesday 3/31, but can't find anything on the board or schedule. Have I killed too many brain cells, or am I missing something? Thanks!
  4. I'm in and can help shuttle kayaks with a truck, and I have a spare sit-in kayak if anyone wants to join. It's not that big, FYI. PM me. --Chris
  5. I'll be trying to make it as well. I'll be brining my yak, and I have an extra kayak for someone that isn't too tall (9.5ft yak). Let me know if anyone wants to me to bring it (email is best form of communication for me). I can fit 4 kayaks on the top of my roof if we need to shuttle cars around with my Yakima rack, if needed. 6. As my first year with the ISA and first real year fishing in rivers, I learned ALOT and caught the most smallmouth ever in my life. The boards and outings introduced my to a number of great locations on rivers and lakes, and a number of techniques. Slider heads/grubs, sm cranks, and inline spinners did the trick this year; or were what I used in the rivers. I also took to night time topwater fishing for green carp down the street from me during the summer. All in all, great year, much learned, and planning for next years adventures. Thanks ISA!
  7. I'm planning on going if the conditions are reported good as well. Thinking of bringing the kayak, and can shuffle others around if needed. --Chris
  8. I'm planning on attending, and will be bringing a kayak unless someone has room in a boat.
  9. uuggggh, tough day for me. Zero bites, or visuals of fish being active. I went up and down the willows with a crank (craw and shad types), inline spinners, and topwater Pop-R's....nothing. Long time to wade in the heat with a hangover! Oh well, the river looks good, today was just not my day. Thanks for hosting ISA, Chris
  10. gonna be awfully hot out there tomorrow at 2pm....bring a cooler and at least a hat!
  11. Since these conditions sound bleak, is anyone going to the K3 outing later in the day?
  12. I run a lot of cranks and love my 2 St Croix 6.8 and 7 ft rods. Medium action.
  13. 10am? Do they open the place earlier? I'll be there early!
  14. Great, heading down today to check it out before Sunday as well.
  15. I have a great Olympus model that is water proof...don't know the exact brand offhand, but it was $350
  16. Thanks for the responses! Considering weather.com is reporting winds from SW at 18 mph, kayaking might be tough, but I might bring 2 anyway.
  17. is there an address for people that aren't familiar with the area?
  18. I use 2 low end 9.5 ft models made by Perception. for flat water and the DuPage they work perfect and start at $300 + $100+ paddle. Until I use them more and REALLY see a difference, I'm sticking to them. Especially since you can outfit you kayak with rod holders by yourself, instead of paying $1K+ for one 'made' for fishing. The fishing kayaks have some extra features, but at this time, I can't justify the price.
  19. As a brand new member, I have to say I enjoyed the meeting a great deal and look forward to many more. As a new kayak fisherman and having friends that are hardcore kayakers, it was nice to hear that the iDNR is trying to help the access problems for us, especially in regards to the Vermilion. Thanks for the great learning opportunity! -Chris Serafin
  20. Say what you want about Carp, but a 30 pound fish on a fly rod has got to be cool. What would be the ethical thing to do with them though, once caught? From what I understand, they eat..well everything....and gamefish eggs, and alot of people throw them on shore.
  21. As like many of you, I can't wait to get in the middle of a river and start fishing. I'm trying to pick out some waders what will help keep me above hypothermia, and wondering if anyone has suggestions and/or things they would do differently now that they already purchased their waders. Hopeful requirements: -Keep you dry/warm in cold spring water -Be basically durable. Not going to be bushwackin' Any comments appreciated, ---Chris
  22. I purchased a kayak late in the season but was able to take it out a few times and had a great time. Flat water mainly, but I did try the DuPage in Nov and found it very hard to fish and keep stable at the same time. I think the best way to fish from a kayak in a river is to use an anchor or beach it and fish, and then float further down to change spots....but then again I'm still learning... btw: 9.5 kayak my 2 cents, -chris
  23. I'm starting to plan a long weekend in Feb/March to travel down south for some warmer fishing opportunities, and I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions. I'm thinking of traveling/driving to some places directly south of us. Species agnostic.
