ISA Fly Tying Event
Learn to tie the fly fisherman’s version of the Ned Rig
“The Eggo”
With Craig RiendeauCome and join us on Saturday April 27 th at the DuPage Fly Fishing Company at
11:00am. It’s located at 1512 N Naper Blvd #136, Naperville. Craig Riendeau will
demonstrate how to tie his new pattern, the Eggo, the fly fisherman’s Ned rig.
This will be a demonstration and tie along. All materials will be provided. Please bring
your own vise and tying tools. This pattern is definitely outside the box when it comes to
techniques to create this fly. Be prepared to have an open mind and learn some new
ways to tie that even the most seasoned tying veteran has not seen yet. Hard to tie?
No. Different? Yes. Great opportunity to learn something new to become a more
complete tier, because the only boundaries in fly tying is a failure of imagination.
There are a few tools needed that may not be in your usual tying box. It will help to have
but we can share if you do not have these. A small pair of side cutter plyers, a bodkin,
Super Glue Gel, UV glue and blue light, a cigarette lighter and a chef’s torch. Yes, let
your imagination run wild, this will be fun! Survivors will be treated to lunch. -
Dick,
Unless we get a bunch of signups for the 2nd week, we will have to cancel the entire second week.
-

The Illinois Smallmouth Alliance board is pleased to announce that the ISA has become an affiliate member of Fly Fishers International. The primary reason why the ISA board decided to do this is that being a member enables the ISA to reduce liability insurance costs by almost 70 percent. There are other benefits of becoming a member of Fly Fisher’s International.
According the FFI’s web site “The mission of Fly Fishers International is to foster the legacy of fly fishing for all fish in all waters through conservation, education, and inspiring a growing community of fly fishers.” We feel that the mission of the FFI fits very well with the goals of the ISA. ISA members include many fly fishermen and being a member of the FFI could help the ISA to increase our membership.
In joining the Fly Fishers International, the Illinois Smallmouth Alliance will be in the Upper Midwest Council of the Fly Fishers International. Leadership of the Upper Midwest Council have already reached out to us to figure out they can collaborate with the ISA. We will keep you updated as things progress.
We urge you to learn about Fly Fishers International and the Midwest Council by checking out their web sites.

Matt, Welcome to the club!

The ISA is looking for new board member. After many years of being an ISA board member, Terry Dodge is stepping down. We need a member to step up to become the Director of Communications.
This job entails publishing the monthly ISA news and sending out notifications when necessary. All of this work is done with Constant Contact web software. Computer competency is necessary, and Terry will provide training and there are lots of training videos available. It would be great if the new Director of Communications could also improve the ISA’s social media presence, too.
Please let us know if you are interested or if you have any questions. Contact Alan Sherman on the ISA bulletin board or send us an email at isalliance2@gmail.com.

Dick,
Here are answers to your questions after reviewing these issues at the recent ISA Board Meeting.
- If we have just a few open spots, people can sign up at the last minute. Right now we have too many open spots for the second week.
- We have a deadline of May 31 to determine whether we have to cancel the 2nd week. As it stands now, we would be cancelling the 2nd week. We need members to sign up sooner rather than later.
- We do not know what the new owner's long term plans are for Tinkers Dam. I will be reaching out to them close to the event and find out if the cabin will be available next year. We want to continue this event.
- If the ISA cannot rent the cabin next year, someone will need to do some leg work to find another alternative. We would welcome of help of any members that would be interested in helping with the search process if that becomes necessary.
The takeaway from all of this is that we need members to sign up for the second week ASAP to keep the second week from being cancelled.
Alan

I've been tying and fishing with "hair jigs" with spinning gear over the past couple of months. The biggest downside is that unless they are tied with relatively heavy jigs, it is tough to get the kind of casting distance that you you get throwing plastic baits. They fish well within the distance that you can cast them.
I've tied jig versions of flies that I have used and I have caught fish with some of them. My Fuzzy Grub pattern has done well, as have rabbit strip patterns like Tom L's Foxy Craw. I have tied the Bad Hair Day on jigs that that pattern just does have the same action or has had as good of results as the fly version of the pattern.
Gene, what kind of eyes (size/brand are you using are your jig?
-
I’m looking forward to fishing with Gordon in the new/old canoe.

I'm in the process of reducing clutter in my basement and I have too much fishing gear with more duplicates than I can use.. I have an eight weight setup that needs to be used.
The rod is a Guideline rod that was a prototype, so it has no markings on it. Guideline is a company that went out of business several years ago. It is a fast action rod is a cannon that has not seen much use. The reel is a Lamson Konic 3.5 that is loaded with a eight weight Scientific Anglers Wavelength MPX line. The reel shows signs of use, but it works just fine. The line also has not seen much use and is great shape.
I am asking $100 for the setup. I would be happy to meet you someplace in the suburbs where you can test cast the rod . PM me if you are interested.
