    What do you paddle?

I have a 12 old town voyager (budget version of the loon) loved it until I bought a old town discovery 119 solo canoe. the 12' canoe carries more gear, much more comfy, and much easier to get in and out of. Since the waters I fish are small, I ofter step out to fish from shore or need to portage. the canoe is like stepping out of a pickup truck and the kayak is like getting up and out of kids snow sled.
  4. Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. The grass carp as i understand differ from the sterile fish that folks stock in their pond. These Grass carp are ,I believe, invasive carp from asia just as the silvers and bigheads are. They are not sterile and are almost as numerous as the bigheads and silvers....... Went to a small creek with my solo canoe today and saw many grassies up this very small creek but no takers on the #1 and #2 mepps I was throwing. Did manage 5 smallies up to 13" though. I think the mack will have to be my carp spot...sadly.
  5. John, thanks so much for the reply. I was wondering what other lure might work better. The smallmouth here on the mack have not been cooperating much for me the last couple years, so with my love of paddling and fishing, I may have to focus on other species to provide a little action on my floats.
  6. Just got off the mackinaw and had a very interesting trip. Caught two asian grass carp on topwater. First fish was 1.5lbs and the second was over 10lbs. The big one finally broke my 6lb. test and took my popr with it. These fish hammered the bait like a smallie or a musky. Could not believe it.They did not get snagged or suck it in, rather totally destroyed the bait. I have spent all spring and summer bowfishing these fish in the il. river backwaters but had no idea they would strike a topwater lure so aggressively. Is this common? After the second fish, i realized it must not be a fluke. Anybody else have this happen?
  7. Just got home from n.w. wisconsin on a weeks vacation.Used a shuttle service and floated a nice river and my son even caught a 21" smallie along with many 12" and 13" ers. Would like to try a pretty river near home "central il." and the vermillion comes to mind.(hope to hit the mack a time or two as well) Will probably go solo and would need shuttled, anybody know of a shuttle service near a good section the the vermillion river? thanks
  8. Yes you are correct, any canoe would be tippy. A number of manufacturers make boats for flat calm water that are wider with a flatter hull, hoping to find someone wanting a quicker boat for rivers or touring. I have a set of homemade outriggers that will allow me to stand, however it is then harder to slip through flooded timber.
  9. I have a green OT disco 164 in very good condition and would consider trading for a canoe of equal value that would be easy to stand and bowfish out of. This boat has 3 cane seats and the stain is the darker color. Just a few normal scraps on the bottom from a some gravel bars, but in great shape. Always stored in my garage. I have purchased several kayaks and a solo boat for rivers and would like to trade for a nice stable lake canoe. I live in central Il., thanks, Sean
  10. Hey Jonn, does the new jig have a tied skirt or a rubber band collar?
  11. thanks for suggestions, was already thinking about a anchor trolley, would like to make one that can be removed and put on my yak.
  12. sorry, maybe I should have put this post in gear and techn. , Sean
  13. hey guys, I am new to the forum and am hoping to learn a little more about catching smallies in small streams and creeks. Just purchased a solo canoe from Dicks sporting goods { kay-noe, or old town disc 119} and was wondering if anyone has any rigging suggestions for me. Been searching the web and a number of guys in southern states suggest moving the seat more toward center and lowering it. Any rigging, or modification suggestions would be appreciated, thanks, Sean
