  1. I got this in my email yesterday. We'll see what happens going forward... but a nice short term win!

Win! Aquila Resources Withdraws Lease Application

Your advocacy last summer has paid off - 406 acres of Michigan's Upper Peninsula will not be leased for mining

    Hi Kevin,

Do you remember sending in comments to urge the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to request a strict classification of a mineral lease application for approximately 406 acres that contains high quality waters and habitat for threatened and endangered species in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan? We sure do. Back in August, over sixty of you sent in comments opposing this permit and it has paid off! Aquila Resources, the company seeking this lease, has withdrawn their application.

Since 2017, Freshwater Future has worked with local advocates including Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River, Inc. and Front 40 to ensure that this open-pit mine does not destroy sacred waters and precious habitat. Thanks to all of you who submitted comments, we are estactic to see these wetlands and their biodiversity continue to thrive in Michigan's wild U.P. We will keep you informed with any more updates.

    Take care,

    Your friends at Freshwater Future

i hear ya. but from the euro rods and small crick driftless glass rods i’ve bought lately i’m getting serious stink eye from my old lady!

I got bit by the BFS bug and trout fishing about 6 years ago. There's a glass rod that Daiwa makes that I'm drooling over.... wife would be okay with it but i need to convince myself haha

  3. Those look really good! I'd be curious on weight... they look 1/16 or 1/8. How heavy of stuff can you guys throw? I mean I get that it's all related/relative (line, rod etc.) working together. But at what point would you be better off just using spinning or baitcasting gear? Or would you just up a rod and line rating to be able to throw a heavier fly?

  4. That nest has been there for a minute.... there's a pair of birds that has been successfully breading there. It's a very cool thing!!!

What's more intimidating to a wild animal? One lone fisherman slowly moving through the area or a large group of birders hanging out in the area for hours but 330 feet away?!? I wouldn't worry about floating through there. And as far as wading goes just don't park yourself under the nest (or pick up any feathers lol). Regardless the birds have been successfully breading for years so they must feel comfortable enough with the attention. I really wish the forest preserve hadn't cleared out so much brush in that section. I'm sure they have their reasons. I know some of the brush was invasive and the removal of the dam is changing the river flow/streambed location so that might be part of it too. However the brush certainly did keep things from being seen so easily. Not advocating for secrets/ secrecy but at the same time the birders made my point by quoting the regulation. Give the animals some space to feel comfortable and be wild!

edit-wanted to clarify I'm in no way dissing birders.

  5. Pretty area!!!

Honestly idk if there's anything you can do. First time I fished the dupe I caught like 50 plus fish all on the small crawbug. One was 18, maybe a second fish close to that, a 14 and then a whole lot of small fish. Surprising what we remember....haha! Also on the dupe I had a 15 inch fish eat my squarebill and it had a 20 swimming next to it. I don't think the 20 wanted to eat. Seems to me if the 20 really wanted to eat...I mean it was probably the biggest fish in the hole. Point is I think those big fish are just particular..

  6. Quick recap from me. The magic 20 mark eluded me this year but that's okay. I had enough 18's and 19's to keep me entertained for the week.. Had an absolute giant lazily following my plopper Saturday night. Wish that one would have hit. Maybe next year... caught several pike around 24 inches and a few walleye including an 18 that was delicious! Learned a bunch about boat control and approach this year. Friday Aug 11 was my best day. Started out dry and then some rain forced me under the canopy at the shore. Picked an 18.5 when it let up. Then some more rain and another canopy. The skies cleared after this and I hit another 18.5. I then proceeded to lose 5 fish of which a couple were big. Hooked up with another fish  and managed to land this one which was my biggest at 19.75 (pictured). Had one more fish swirl on my plopper. Possibly the biggest swirl ever for me. At this point it was time to make for the ramp as it had been thundering for about an hour.   Got pretty wet loading up but it was worth it.

Great to see everyone! Appreciated fishing out of Ken's boat a portion of the week, Congrats to Eric on his first brutus! We had a bunch of heat lightning after the storm had passed. Took some video of that and upon review found that I also captured a meteor.
