  1. Hoping the Kank is better for me in 2010 than it was in 2009!

  2. Way back when, Bill turned me on to the site that has all the current data on the rivers in the state. It has flow rate and pool stage and all that good stuff. When my old computer died, all my links went with it. I know this is the place to get that link. Thanks in advance. Paul
  3. Unfortunately, I can't make this Satruday's event but I plan on making it June 7th. If anyone needs help with sampling in the future, shoot me a message.
  4. I'm in for June 7th. If I can make the sampling on the 16th, I'll be there too. Paul
  5. I was all over the State Park and Warner Bridge area on Saturday. The wading was very tough. There were parts of Area 7 which were very slippery and steep and then throw in that moving water and it became even tougher. Maybe it was just the downpour which slicked everything up. Good luck out there.
  6. Jim, I caught all my fish with a craw bug. I did throw the swim jig some but the water was stained pretty good and I switched over to a spinnerbait. I could only get bit by throwing by laydowns and eddies since the water was really cruising. They sure were hitting soft and for some reason I failed to connect on a couple better fish. From the sounds of Bill's report, I shoulda stuck witht the spinnerbait more. Tough wading/walking with the mud, steep shores, and slippery rocks from the rain. Overall a good day. Good fishing.
  7. Darin Roddick Small's article was good. Most of the info I've read has been about LM and the swim jig. That's why I came here. I've got a couple different ones to try tomorrow.
  8. So I have caught quite a few nice largemouth with a swim jig this spring and now I want to translate that over to my stream smallies. What do you guys think about color? What color combinations have been most successful for you in different color waters? I know a lot of people say color doesn't really matter that much in the river since smallies are such opportunistic feeders so I don't really know how important it is. Any advice is appreciated.
  9. QUOTE (Ed B @ Dec 24 2008, 04:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Paul You're right about green bay, this spring I caught and released a 22'' smallie in Door county.I also heard a credible rerport of a 7# 11 oz smallie caught while I was there. Ed B There was a guy in my bass club that caught one over 7 off of Washington Island back in 2007. I think it was 7-11 and the picture was incredible.
  10. Like Jim, I have been using KVD's line conditioner. I have been using it with FC and it greatly reduces the memory of 15 lb and 17lb line. I haven't felt the need to use it with 6 and 8 FC since it is pretty limp to begin with especially the 6. Give it a shot!
  11. I use this same length and action in the Avid line. It is an incredible rod and my #1 smallie wading rod. The rod has a great balance of strenght and sensitivity. And the 7' gives you a lot of leverage when fighting a fish. I am 6' and I like the length. In my opinion, a 7' ml LE is about as premium a smallmouth rod as you can get. Good fishing.
  12. I spent some time last Sunday going through about a half dozen old newsletters cutting out old articles. The quality of information is excellent. Great articles and useful tips. That article on gut-hooked fish was great. I used the technique the next day flawlessly. That would be a good illustration to have on this site. Keep up the good work. Paul
  13. FYI- I picked up one at Dick's for $7+. Right now they have 20% off on Rapalas. They are $9.99 at Cabela's. Going give it shot Monday. Good fishing.
  14. John, I too was thinking about students. I run a couple clubs at school and actually I am going to be the bass coach if we decide to start a bass fishing team. The ISHA is beginning a yearly bass tournament and our school might field a team. Naturally, I figured to take the kids for a clean-up a couple times a year on whatever stretch of water I take. We'll see what develops. Good fishing.
  15. Phil, You're right on about pausing and letting the fish take it if it is following. Several years back, I had a brown spot following my Spit-n-Image. I stopped it- bam. 18" smallie. Gotta get back to Sturgeon Bay one of these days. Good fishing
  16. Mike, After thinking about this topic for a little while now and then reading the above-listed link I have a couple questions . 1) Should we not adopt any parts of the Kank? 2) Are the rivers broken down into sections? 3) Would it be beneficial for ISA members to join up in adopting a certain stretch of river? 4) Many of us already do what amounts to several clean-ups a year since we bring garbage bags with us most times out. Do you want us to formally adopt the stretch of river? I realize that a little of this is P.R. and since we already doing it, a little recognition to the ISA would be a positive. The only additional work would be a water test a year. With all that being said, you can put me down for the Dupage River anywhere around Plainfield or Shorewood. Thanks. Paul
  17. I just read a report which talked about the moss on the Kankakee. The guy said that some spots were unfishable. I remember how bad the problem was last summer and fall. Has this been an existing problems for years or is it something that has just gotten worse recently? I don't have a number of seasons worth of experience so I don't know what to compare it to. How do you guys deal with it? Thanks for any advice. Paul
  18. Brian, Gotcha- makes sense. Mark, You confirmed what I was already thinking about the retrieve. Like Senkos, I thought that a lot of the strikes would hit on the fall. I was thinking that the retrieve was that mid-level, walk-the-dog action. That is the main reason why I want to add it to the aresenal. A finesse, mid-water column bait. Thanks all. Gonna pack some the next time I head out. Good fishing
  19. Thanks Brian for the advice. When you do the bullet weight and nails in order to fish in current, are you using mainly an unpstream or downstream approach? I am thinking that in swifter water that sucker would just cruise down the river. Before you laugh too hard, remember that I am more of the largemouth guy where we don't have much current. Thanks again. Paul
  20. I was hoping some of you veterans could give me some advice on fishing flukes. Flukes is a presentation that I have rarely ever fished and I wish to add it to my arsenal. I have been using Senkos for a long time but I know that flukes fish a little different. So these are my questions: 1) When do most of your strikes occur? 2) What is your most successful retrieve? 3) What type of flows do you fish it in? I read that some guys fish in current. How successful is this? 4) Under what conditions is it the most successful? 5) What color has been most productive? Thanks for any advice. Paul
  21. I second what Gary said about Seaguar. I've used the Invisix and its limpness and castability are great. In terms of line twist- I have never had a problem with it. I manually close my bail and put on my own line. I'm doing something right. Good fishing
  22. There were a lot of problems with Vanish when it first came out a couple years ago. They've come out with a new version that supposedly cured some of those problems. I'm not taking a chance though.
  23. This has impacted me on some levels. One thing I have been trying to do is always fish with someone. Splitting the driving is the way to go. I fish for greenies too and I have already opted out of one tournament since it is too far. Another thing I have been doing is driving the speed limit. But will it stop me from fishing the river less this summer when I am off from work? No. I go once or twice a week in the summer and that won't stop unless the gas gets quite a bit higher. I figure it was never free and am I going to let an extra $20 in gas stop me? No. Hey Bill- we should definitely hook up this summer and fish midweek sometime. Paul
  24. Thanks for the heads-up Mike. Son Volt made a couple fantastic albums in the 90s including Trace which is widely considered the greatest alternative country album. Even you don't go to the festival, Son Volt is a band to check out. Good fishing. Paul
  25. Mark, I started using flourocarbon last summer and have been extremely pleased with each one I've tried. I've used 17 lb Trilene Professional (gold box), 15 lb P-line flourocarbon, and 15 lb Seaguar Invisix. I can't really say one is better than the other but I do like the limpness of the 15lb Invisix. I will keep using Trilene and Seaguar since they have been flawless. In terms of stretch, flouoro is not low-stretch. It has equal if not more stretch than mono but since it is more dense, it is more sensitive. Good fishing.
