  1. Not sure, I have to leave by noon so can't make a real long trip. ericg
  2. really a matter of preference. my example above from Boundary Waters days is not all that relevant i realize for several reasons (in Boundary Waters we are essentially competing for the best campsites with other canoe parties, much easier to split the group up to do various direction evening fishing outings near campsite in a lake than in a river, etc) Also I have questions for you Terry: would we be able to leave a vehicle or two at the camping area ahead of time with tents, sleeping bags, etc or would we have to bring them in the kayak/canoe with us? That would make a difference in how easy it is to cover miles. My main concern is to set up camp and preferably cook supper in daylight rather than dark. Of course a couple of power fishers could paddle ahead to start cooking a meal and leave the slow finesse fishers like me to straggle in later ericg
  3. Agree. When we go canoe tripping in the boundary waters we always try to get on the water early, eat a quick sack lunch on the way, make camp by mid afternoon, then have the rest of the afternoon and evening to fish and mess around with cooking and side trips. Certainly dont want to be setting up camp at dusk or dark. Also dont want to miss the dusk fishing hours. 14 miles is too much for one day. ericg
  4. I see the flow guage has almost tripled, levels high, maybe next time. ericg

  10. Wish I could have made it this year, had to work. Was a very educational event last year. ericg
  11. actually it is easier on larger (Rock River size) rivers. I like to find a half mile long rip-rap bank, start at the downstream end of it , and work my way upstream. I rest my foot on a rock at the side of the water and cast upstream for awhile then paddle further upstream and repeat to work the whole rip rap bank eventually. Generally if you stay near the shore you can paddle upstream just fine. (especially when the water levels are relatively low). l I like to stay near shore anyway to avoid powerboats. ericg
  12. breakfast was very good with fancy and unusual menu items. I went fishing in Jude's group and had a great day on the river. I got 16 smb, one largest at approx 14 1/2 -15. Found fish in current, or near rocky banks, or against wood. Hula and Senko fished on the bottom. Also had one big splash of a bite on a topwater which nearly gave me a heart attack, my over-reacted missed hookset sending the lure way behind me with the line wrapped around me several times. LOTS of tubers, kayaks and canoes on the river. ericg
  13. On the Rock River we dont like anything less than 20 horse but that doesnt seem to apply to you. (I have a 16 ft aluminum boat with 20 horse 2 stroke, would consider going to 30 or 40 if I didn't have to mount and dismount the motor by hand to put it in the garage.) ericg
  14. Oh, spending time with family is definitely a good thing, I just wish I could do both ericg
  15. Unfortunately I have to go away with my wife that day so won't be able to make it after all, I have really been looking forward to this outing. Hope we can get out there some other day. ericg
  16. I actually tuck in to the shore below the target and rest my foot on a rock or log to hold the kayak in place so I can pick apart the spot as long as I like. I use an anchor only in ponds. ericg
  17. shoulder is great, thanks, Ill be there for the lecture and the float. Will be good to get the kayak out of the garage. eric
  18. I'd be interested in coming to the seminar if I can bring my kayak and do a float with you guys afterwards. Does that work? eric
  19. Lowrance Elite-4X DSI (color) on sale at Cabelas for 169 I mounted mine with a through hull installation on my kayak, works very well. ericg
