  1. The taper of the bamboo Orvis "Battenkill Bass" was designed to easily throw the big flies smallies love. This particular rod, serial number 57601, was crafted by the retired Orvis master rod bulider, Ron White, in 1971. It's a two piece 8 footer HCF (7 wt) with an extra tip in beautiful condition -- check out the attached photos. It was only lightly fished. I will include a Orvis bass taper line. $700.00 including shipping. Bruce
  2. Cabela's RLS Model 2 brand new in the box. It's a Large Arbor, machined aluminum with Rulon disc drag. Will take 80 yard of backing with WF6 line. Will let it go for $65.00. They list for $129.00 in the catalog. You can read the great reviews on the Cabela website. Will include a lightly used Scientific Anglers Ultra3 floating WF6 fly line with the deal. $7.00 shipping or I can deliver it to you at the ISA Fly Fishing Show in St. Charles on1/21. Bruce
  3. This quality Tibor fly reel is brand new in the box. I purchased it in 2008 but ended up not using it when I found the gold model with a spare spool. It is the older non-CL model. Weight 3.5 0z; frame size 3 x 1.25"; backing capacity 100 yds 20 lib micron with 4 wt line. Will handle 2 to 5 wt lines and can be set up for left or right hand retrieve. A new Tibor Light Spring Creek reel sells for around $300. Since this is the old model, I'm selling this beauty for $150.00. $7.00 shipping or I can deliver it to you at the ISA Fly Fishing Show in St. Charles on 1/21. Bruce
  4. This is an Orvis Battenkill Impregnated 8', 3 3/4 oz HFG (4 wf4) "Nymph" two piece fly rod with two tips. Serial number 59943 -- built by the master Ron White in 1970. The taper is designed to smoothly cast nymphs and indicators. The cork is in excellent condition and all wraps and hardware are original. Reel seat is in excellent condition. All ferrules fit nicely. Aluminum tube and fabric case are original. All wraps and guides in excellent condition. I purchased the rod in 2007 from Skip Zapffe -- a respected Pacific Northwest fishing guide. His name is engraved on the metal portion of the rod handle. The rod has been lightly fished by Zapffe and me. -- I would have it used it more but I fell in love with my 10 ft. Scott 5 wt for nymph fishing. Orvis rods like this sell for between $650 and $800 on the Coldwater Collectibles website. I'm asking $475 and will include a Cortland Cortland 444 Synthetic Silk WF 4 line with the deal. Shipping is $15.00 or I can deliver the rod at the ISA Fly Fishing Show in St. Charles. Bruce
  5. I've got a Cabela's RLS Model 2 which is new in the box. It's a Large Arbor, machined aluminum with Rulon disc drag. Would let it go for $50. You can read the reviews on the Cabela website. Bruce
  6. I've started using some hula grubs with my baitcasting rig. What are some of your favorite colors for smallies in central IL? What's your most effective retrieve? Thanks guys. Bruce
  7. Has anyone fished the stretch of Vermilion River and two creeks in the Sandy Ford Nature Preserve? Thanks Bruce
  8. Thanks again for organizing the Mac outing. I meant to ask Jim where he stays when fishing Lake Taneycomo. What is Jim's handle on the ISA website? Thanks Bruce

  10. To introduce you to fly fishing, I recommend you consider upgrading to Cabela's Redington Crosswater Fly Rod Outfit -- the 5 weight - two piece rod for $119. It comes with a decent Rio fly line. LL Bean has a combo designed for beginners -- 8'6 5 weight outfit for $69 -- Angler II Outfit KH268355--if you have a little more money in your budget, the LL Bean Streamlight outfit would be worth considering for $175 KH268769. Unlike Cabela's, with LL Bean the shipping is free. With a five weight rod you can cast small flies size 18 to larger ones size 6. This is one of the most popular sizes for general trout fishing, but would work great for panfish and bass. The quality of the fly rod and the fly line are the two most important components in the outfit. I highly recommend you take some lessons. The Orvis stores in the Chicago area offer free lessons on Saturday mornings. Bruce Just found the Redington Crosswater outfit online at Sierra Trading Post for $80.
