Coming this Fall:http://vimeo.com/46309723 In April, I cast these in Manchester, VT. In a word: Awesome. Say what you want about the price range, the precise same things were spewed about the Helios and it became (and still is after 5 years) the best selling rod line of all time. I hope to have a few for you all to cast in late September. Joseph
  4. Well, you will be happy to know that (so far) I have three rods that guys brought in and I am donating them to the ISA. One is an interesting glass rod that many of you will find interesting to cast. This offer runs through July, call if you have questions, Joseph 312.440.0662
  5. Hello, all If you bring a working (not broken) used fly rod...any old one..... to Orvis-Chicago, we will give you 20% off of a NEW Helios, Access or Super Fine fly rod. We will be collecting these donated fly rods through the month of July. The rods we get in the lighter weights will be donated to the Gary Borger Chapter of Trout Unlimited for their use with the Boy Scouts. Those rods we get in the higher weights will be give to the ISA. Again, bring me a used fly rod and you can save up to $150 on a new rod Questions? Call me at Orvis-Chicago 312.440.0662 Joseph
  6. Deer body hair is good for spinning bass bugs; deer belly hair is best, I've got plenty at Orvis downtown. And Tom is right, the 100 or 200 Denier thread is just awesome for spinning or stacking hair. BTW, I taught Cory Gale an extremely little bit about spinning deer hair back in the days when he was all thumbs. Seriously, the man tied like he had ten thumbs. This won't mean anything to you now, but if you get an audience with him, you will learn that Cory Gale is the Chris Helm of the ISA. Joseph
  7. For those of you not in the WJOL radius, you can listen live by going here: http://www.wjol.com/Listen-Live-/5336088 I'll be listening!! Joseph
  8. Depends. Does Zeno have a tennis match on the North Shore that day?
  9. When deciding on which grip to get used to (and they all take getting used to) use the grip that best stops the rod on your back cast. With your heavier weight rods, you have a bit more inertia to handle. A thumb-on-top grip tends to be a better grip with rods of this weight; it helps you more effectively stop the rod. Saltwater rods are designed with an upwells cork handle. There's a convenient place to put your thumb. If the grip you are using (or have switched to) doesn't let you effectively stop the rod, your rod load will dissipate. The Three Point grip is useful to me for rods of lighter weights only. Joseph

  14. He's fun to fish with. Knows the river and handles the boat very well for anglers of all skill levels. I highly recommend him. Joseph
  15. Thanks Ryan..I can use a body or two downtown this weekend. We teach at the Peggy Notebart nature Museum campus on Fullerton & Lake Shore Drive. It'll be hot so we've moved each day to an 8 AM start. Call me if you can help out, Joseph Meyer Orvis-Chicago 312.440.0662

  19. My initial reaction was to be against the cut to this program but after doing some cursory research, I'm not so sure. No one I have talked to seems to know much about it, it pales in comparison to the program that Bob Long, Jr. used to run: Mayor Daley's Kids fishing program. Do I think NGOs can pick up the slack? maybe but an organization like the ISA and TU need many more volunteers. More volunteers are needed to address needs, come up with the right product for the right market. Too few folks are constantly counted on to do the heavy lifting. Volunteers are not born, they're made. Step up...help out. Joseph
  20. I don't know Mike, what did happen to teach a man to fish? John Loebach and his crew of fly rodders are donating their time teaching, ronk is donating his time to help teach fly fishing with Orvis as he has done in the past with TU, Mike Clifford is doing yeoman service with Sgt. Tommy's kids, plus all of those hardworking ISA members who help Rich with lessons at Hunting & Fishing days out at Silver lake. Where have you been? With all of your knowledge, you could be bringing another generation of anglers and stream stewards to the water. When are we going to see you at the head of the class teaching anything to anybody? Joseph
  21. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/06/08/wasted-tax-dollars/ Oddly, this is precisely where I do my FREE instruction for Orvis. This clip is right behind the Peggy Notebart nature Museum on Fullerton & Lake Shore drive. Can still use some volunteers for this weekend and next weekend, BTW Joseph 312.440.0662
  22. Ergo the $75 price tag. Still a heckofa fly line. Joseph
