  1. I'd have to say the main reason this area has been chosen is who holds land along the creek. Rumor had it close to ten years ago that a certain house rep bought land out there in case this road would eventually go in. I'm not to sure if there is truth to it or not. It's to bad that a park could not be put up along the whole creek area instead of a highway. Either way the amount of people moving into this area is amazing. A Highway could be used in the area but also outdoor rec areas are going to be needed just as much. Hopefully the same people that got together and shut down the nascar track in the area will get together and stop this as well. As for the fishing in this creek it is not to bad for a creek. I personally always fished the little rock creek west of it though. Actually all the creeks that cross galena or chicago road are not to bad in areas.
  2. I have always thought this was the case after cold fronts. Slow down go small and I'll catch the tempermental fish. This summer I fished the Spoon river after a front came through and the air temp droped around 15 degrees. After a few hours and about as many fish I tied on a diving crank bait. I had no intentions of catching any bass but was looking to snag a few carp. I did not snag any carp but after my second cast reeling it as fast as I could I got a smallie. Two casts later picked up another. After walking back to my car I ended up getting 4 Smallies and a channel cat in about 30 minutes. I thought it was weird and against everything I have read but the faster I went that day the better I did.
  3. Not trying to change the subjects or anything but who does one call when they witness people dumping trash into a river or creek? And what are the laws? This morning I went out after work to fish this new area for me. As I get there a lady pulls up and starts throwing garbage straight into the stream. While she was pulling out an old file cabinet and a grill to dump over the bank I stopped her. I was very polite about it too She said she owned the property and that she could but took off like a bat out of hell when I started approaching her.
  4. Ummm smallies are the ones with the big red tail right? Seriously I have canoed a few rivers here and in Iowa and have seen larger bass cruising the flats with schools of carp. I thought I was going nuts the first time but now have seen it a bunch. As for what to do with carp I'll ussually throw them back. I do use a few for fertelizer ever spring though. Drum are a little different. Drum will eat minnows. Yesterday I fished the Mississippi down the street from my house. When I got there the river was just a constant boil from minnows and drum feeding on them. I am not sure what type of minnows they were but they looked like little carp. After reading an article on the Illinois river recently I sure hope they were not Asian carp. The Asia carp are probably the #1 threat to our sport fishing in the USA today. They do not eat any minnows, bugs, or crayfish but they feed on the plankton that everything else eats. This article stated that up to 90% of the Illinois rivers bio mass was Asian carp in places. That is just plain scary.
  5. The largest smallie I've seen in my life was swimming with a bunch of carp.
  6. You win!!! I have access to a 1000 volt megger. A couple of cranks with it would catch a few I bet too.
  7. If its my favorite river then a 3" pumpkin power leech on a 1/8 ounce slider head. Average time to first fish is right around 2 minutes. Thats including the walk from my car to the water. First cast infront of some logs will usually do it. I'd then buy some catch and release signs for the river and a couple garbage cans to put where the people fish the most.
  8. I caught one Friday that had a big dark spot on the one side of it. It was not nearly like your fish but It did go back about two inches from the dorsal fin. On this one I could easily see a V shaped scar on both sides of the fish. I'm not sure what caused yours to do that but a heron had to be the cause of mine.
  9. Well,I went to the Edwards river yesterday. To call it a river is to call my garden hose a creek. The river looks like its one of those rivers that in spring might have some water or when it rains flash floods. As for fishing of course i tried for an hour by the rt 17 bridge. I did not catch a thing. I did see a bunch of big carp and a few redhorse. The river was mostly 4"- 18" deep very slow with a mostly sand mud bottom. I then went to coon creek which is about 6 miles away. It was pretty much the same as the Edwards.
  10. I have not been able to make it down there yet. I did pass it going to the big New Winsor rodeo the other night. Where I passed it did not look very good. It was about 4 feet wide . Closer to the mississippi about 20 smaller streams empty into it so it is probably better there. I'll go in a few more weeks. My next 2 weekends are going to be busy.
  11. I fished at 8 dams on the fox back in the day. The Yorkville dam was pretty easy to fish along with most of them. Most the people at the yorkville dam that have drowned have done so during low water condition. People forget how dangerous the boils are and tend to get to close. People tend to forget the power of moving water.
  12. Anyone know anything about the Edwards river? It looks like it has some good flow down by rte 17 but I have not fished it yet. Was thinking of going maybe next week. Was wondering if it is large enough to canoe down by the Mississippi and wondering if there are smallies in it?
  13. How did the shocking go at the creek? I know 10 years back I used to catch smallies in the creek by that lake Jerico I bellieve it was. None had any good size to them most in the 6"-12" range.
  14. Anyone ever fish the Rock by Prophetstown or the creeks by there? It is not to far from my work and I heard it was good from one guy up there but he is not a very credible source. "AKA 7.5 pound smallie 18.5 inches" I did go to the creek that he supposedly caught this wonder fish. I did see a couple 15-18 inches but they were on spawn beds back when I went so I didn't even fish. A good thing about the Quad-City area though is I'm about the only one around that fishes mainly for smallmouth. Cats are King on the Rock down here. And the Mississippi is mainly fished for Largemouth, Cats, and Walleye.
  15. I'd have to agree with the guy that said right place right time. I got a 20" 4 pound 5oz smallie today out of a local river. I have fished for bass now for close to 20 years and must say some areas just do not have fish that large. I fished the Fox and Dupage tons while I was younger and think my largest there was 18.5. Although I know bigger fish do exsist in both. I was unable to hook into one.
