  1. That picture looks familiar. I think I have a few exactly like that in my smallie box.
  2. It was rising all morning. It looks like it crested already. The fish needed some new water to play in.
  3. I hand hold my line for most instances. It keeps me more mobile and can get my line out faster. Still trying to master the double haul and steeple cast. I had a cable foot control. Not fun in waves and while not leaning against my bike seat. I would try the hand control motor before spending big money on a nice foot controlled trolling motor. You can pick them up real cheap on Craigslist. Even if you go with a foot controlled, the hand controlled trolling motor will some day still be used. They are a good backup. I am in the same boat as you. No pun intended. Only mine is a 20ft jon boat. I want a 9.9 4 stroke to fish the 10hp lakes in the area. I am also going to purchase a trolling motor. I will probably wait for early winter. Maybe there will be some good deals on Sportsman's Guide or Bass Pro.
  4. Next time there is an outing near by, I will be sure to bring extra jars! Thanks to TomL and RobG. Both stand up guys always willing to share info and help a fellow fly guy out!
  5. If I wasn't going to be on the Menominee River, I would participate in this outing. Good luck and enjoy folks!
  6. Check the garbage can or compost bin. Wives tend to throw that stuff out like it is going out of style. Especially after the two year anniversary. My wife buried mine in the vermi-compost feed bin.
  7. This I know, probably one of the strangest posts ever on ISA bassbuggers. Let me explain: I am headed up to the Menominee river in two weeks and will be fly fishing only. Target fish are smallmouth and pike. My issue is I am running out of time to tie up more flies. The biggest reason is that I have been busy canning loads of pickles. So, here is my offer. Hopefully, I am not in violation of ISA rules. I am, for a limited time, willing to trade pints of pickles for flies. These pickles are made from cukes out of my garden. I do not use any chemicals and have only used organic fertilizers. The flavor is sweet and spicy. They are great for bloodies and Chicago style dogs. I have been canning these for two years now and have had many many compliments. Most of my coworkers have tasted my pickles. :-) I live near Starved Rock and work in Bolingbrook and some days in Aurora off Eola rd. I will be down at Evergreen Lake this weekend but will meet anyone in the evenings during the week through next Thursday. I am not setting any standards on what type, size or amount of flies. I am good with what you think is fair. Just know you are getting a pint of some fantastic sweet and spicy pickles that will leave you wanting more. I currently have about 20 pints and 15 quart jars. Many more to come. Thanks folks. I appreciate it! Manny
  8. You may want to bring the new owners some garden vegetables. Gotta retain that access you had for so many years.
  9. Good looking flies! Now if the river drops 6 feet, you might be able to wet them.
  10. Umm oh yeah, forgot to say which river. The menominee river folks. Sorry for that little oversight....
  11. Its been quite some time since i have been on this site. It sure feels good to be back. I probably wouldn't have come back when i did if it wasn't for my desire to go on a solo canoe camping trip. i figured this group would know best since the mighty smallmouth is what i want to stay busy catching. With that said, i have narrowed down my destination to one river with many options. Except this river is mighty long and has so many sections, i couldn't possibly make up my mind. Can anyone provide input as to which stretch a guy and his canoe can find a place to set up camp and manage to stay busy catching smallmouth either in the canoe or wading with wading a strong desire? I am an experienced paddler for both raging rivers with a kayak to calm BWCA lakes in a canoe. I've been on two previous solo canoe camping trips. Once off the gunflint trail in thw BWCA and once on the turtle flowage in northern WI. Although i enjoyed my whitewater funboat days, in my later years, i prefer to keep it simple, safe, and silent. So i crossed out Piers gorge and anything with class 2 or worse rapids and prefer avoiding crowded put ins with too many motor boats. And well, the camping part i am looking for simple and primative. As far as fishing goes, i plan to bring a full artillery of bait casting, spin casting and my trusty 4,5 and 8wt fly rods. I will be paddling a 16ft tandem roylex canoe (sitting in the front seat facing back to even the boat) that i am more than comfortable in. I am either bringing my bug shielded hammock or a small bivy tent. If a section also has options of wading up tributaries for bonus trout, even better. My trip date range is sometime in August possibly around the 12th or right around. If you wish to share but would rather keep it private, please feel free to mesage me. Thanks for all of you input Manny
  12. (Cough cough). Been awhile since I logged on to this site. Glad to see everyone is still kicking. John, I have only fished the V once all year. If the river drops a few more inches, it may be time to wade.
  13. Check out the Old Town Penobscot 16' roylex. It is a tandem canoe that can be paddled solo if you use the other seat and face the other way. It does beer can a little bit when I am solo but I can keep up with my buddy in his fancy two thousand dollar boat. I have used this boat in the BWCA on my solo camping trip a few years ago. I also paddle this boat in all the rivers around here. It takes a beating and has held up well. It weights in at 49 pounds and has had up to two people and about 130 lbs of gear for week long trips. Used they can be found for 400-500 bucks. Fishing kayaks do not have the versatility that a nice canoe does. You can always bring somebody along in a canoe. Not so much in a yak....
  14. In my eyes, it is depends on what you consider a successful outing. I am one to make little changes when fish are biting good to see if there is a chance at a faster catch rate. How do you know if the good bite is only good because the blue sparkle on the current lure is close to the color they really want and black/green is the color that will make it a blast of a day? Or maybe the fish are at 5 feet but your lure is only picking out the ones who are willing to go up a foot to where your lure is swimming at. Then I would have to try a heavier version of the lure if I can't get the original lure down through other retrieval methods. I only make major changes when the skunk is on the platter.
  15. Holy Mackerel. This is not like you John. Did you leave him redfished? You better stay away from clownfish like that. They tend to get you in a pickerel often. Anyhoot, back to my M and M's. They are starting to smelt in my hands, not in my largemouth.
  16. And this is why I bought a house within walking distance of the Lowell bridge. When it is high, grab the kayak and run some of Illinois most challenging rapids. When it is up but moving, grab the cat rods. When it slows down, grab the fly rod and waders and hit the holes. What else can you ask for? MM
  17. Hello, My Wife "to be" and I are planning to be in the UP for our honeymoon for about a week starting this coming Monday (9/10). One of the activities we plan to partake in is fly fishing for the salmon/trout in the tribs. Our other activities include hiking, biking and of course shopping. Would anyone like to share other options for sites to see, things to do and what not? We are staying in Eagle River within the Keweenaw peninsula and will drive as far as the porkies, and maybe as far east as Marquette. As far as fishing goes, we could use some help with selecting the better tribs to fish for the pink and coho runs that are expected to start any day now? Can anyone share any fly selections and presentations? We are also going to try for brookies further up the tribs, and not against a few smallie streams as well. Deanna recently started fly fishing and would really like to get her on a few nice fish to seal the deal for return trips every year for the anniversary (yes, selfish ain't I?). My ultimate goal would be to convince her to move up there so please help me help her!!!!!!! Thanks in advance for all of your input. Soon to be married Manny
  18. I couldn't see from the only picture they had. I will try to get on touch with a paddling buddy from the area.
  19. It was a matter of time before they started piling up. Sad to see this to a river so close to me. If we do not get some rain, this will continue towards my neck of the woods. http://mywebtimes.com/archives/ottawa/display.php?id=459115
  20. The low water period came early this year. Maybe a month early. Hopefully, the smallies will survive.
  21. I am happy to inform you that I have decided to join the fight to win our waters back. With a little help from above, I should be on the Illinois river gill netting these fish next weekend. I have a half dozen hoop nets to throw at them as well. With my employment in the magazine print business becoming more and more insecure ( been here 15 years ), I thought not to wait until they tell me to find another job. Gosh darn it, I am putting my future in my hands. For now, and while I still have a job with benefits, I plan to fish the weekends and use my last two weeks of vacation time to get in the swing of things. It will be tough to work a full time job that requires 140 miles of driving each day and then fish all weekend. But in the end, I will be happier for helping our waters and leaving my families fate in my hands and not in the hands of a greedy CEO who still gets raises and bonuses while the rest do not. I have spent the last four months preparing a business plan, selling all my goodies and investing in the equipment to become a viable force to be reckoned with. I hope to one day tell my kids that their Dad was one of the guys who fought a tuff war to get our rivers back.[ If anyone has helpful tips (besides wearing a helmet), please contact me. Wish me luck guys!!! Manny
  22. TTT No takers? I think if it sits for another week, I might have to head up to the Milwaukee and try it out.
