  1. When I fish at my place in northern WI, I usually use a # 2 circle hook. Don't hook up with as many fish as I should. I think it's because the smallies are on average a bit larger. My buddy uses a 2/0 circle and has better hook ups. I will be using that size also in the future.
  2. Just got back from my weekend trip to my place near the U.P. On Saturday we got 49 fish-45 were smallies. Thirty were over 17"- largest 22". i think I lost at least 3 true trophies of 6 lb's or more.

    fly fishing

I have a place on a river in northern WI. I want to start fly fishing the trophy smallies that we've been getting on spinning gear. is there a universal leader that can be used for dry and wet flies or do you have to switch every time you use one or the other?
  4. Very cool but those kayaks look uncomfortable. I have a place near Green Bay and always wonder where the smallies go in the winter. If there is no ice on the river I like to get out but I havn't figured them out. Do I stick to deeper holes as I know they arn't shallow.
  5. You're right. When you take a measuring tape & measure it out it really is amazing! billyk
  6. On the river I'm on a local caught a 10 lb- 4 oz smallmouth last fall verified by the WI DNR. Don't know it's length though. billyk
  7. Ok- leaning twords the replica. With the formula for figuring out the weight of a fish(which by the way comes within 6 oz of my Rapala scale) it seems worth letting her get to 24 or 25'. billyk
  8. Hi Guy's, i've heard recently of the effectiveness of marabou and hair jigs on smallmouth. I read an article in ISA'a magazine and also Bassmasters. The 3-4 inch size jigs are supposedly very good on river bass. Although not always easy to find I did pick some up & am considering making my own. I'd appreciate some feed back from guy's who use these jigs. Many thanks! billyk
  9. Exactly Jonn, the biologist told me that I'd be shocked to know how many fish die naturally each year & end up on the bottom of the river. Just like people. billyk
  10. Hi guy's, I have a place in northern WI that I have fished for over 25 years. It's considered a trophy smallmouth river. I've never kept a smallie- ever but I'm considering keeping one IF I'm able to get the trophy I'm looking for. A DNR officer & fisheries biologist told me that a smallmouth the size of which I would mount(at least 23") is an old fish & past her reproductive prime. The eggs she deposits are of low quality & not many hatch. That's why they tell us to release fish fron 17"- 20" in length. These are the prime spawners. Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated. billyk
  11. going up next week. We'll probably fish for walleye but occasionally a smallie will hit the jig & minnow. The river is open all year for walleye and bass are catch & release til June 23rd. billyk
  12. I hear ya. I see them all over Busse woods by the lake. Just ignorance! I don't think the bait shop owners would want to be bothered with having to send them in for their money so I don't expect to ever see that happen. billyk
  13. Hi boy's, I'm headed up to northern WI to open up our place for the season. We're going to do some fishing and obviously the water temps are going to be cold. Pre- pre spawn. Going to try to get some smallies. What is your favorite early season presentation for this time of year? Last year I got a few on suspended jerk baits & my favorite pre spawn presentation is a wacky rigged finesse worm. Walleye's hit well & we get bonus sturgeon but the smallies are why we go up. billyk
