  10. Dan, Bob is a great guy, no doubt about. I found him to be very responsive when I sent him a question last year, he certainly was helpful. Saw the pics of your son very cool. Have submitted photos of my sson with fish and they sure do get a kick out of seeing their pics in the paper. Great thing you're doing involving your son in the outdoors, that has to be one important responsibilty for us as a parents.
  11. "Something to consider when buying a reel, is the after sales service support an OEM gives. Shimano is #1 in the business." I will agree with the above statement by Ken D. I needed a replacement part for a reel, contacted Shimano and received it at no cost from Customer Service, within several days. All my reels are Shimano, have lasted without a problem some for 15 years with TLC. This includes bait castng and spinning reels.
  12. Thanks Jim. Alot of good info. I keep forgetting about prior posts.
  13. Would like to know what ISA members experiences have been if using Berkley Gulp. I keep seeing/hearing good things, but my past experieence have been less than positive. Just looking for input and/or recommendations.
  14. Norm, First, let me say that you are to complimented on your thoughtfulness and act of kindness. Most commendable to say the least. I'd like to share a story and I'll be brief. Exploring deeper into and practicing beliefs of my Native American Ancestry, I have learned many lessons from the Elders and Spiritual leaders and most come back to (1) I can only be responsible for myself (2) Continue to live and conduct myself in a "good way" (3) Good things happen to those who are the givers. As negative as most of this was for you, the upside is you were still able to share a gift with the children and that's what mattered. Good people and good acts never unnoticed. When I get really upset over something like this, I remember a story a Lakota Spiritual Leader from the Rosebud told me. He said he was at a Pow Wow and recorcing some songs. He walked away left his rather expensive recorder, unattended but on and when he returned it was gone. Things like this are not suposed happen at the gatherings. I said, "Why would anyone do that, weren't you mad or upset?" He looked at me and said, " I guess whoever took it, needed much more that I did." And I agree that there are some "goofs" out there, but there are alot of good kids too. My 12 year old thought what happened was outright cruel. He met the Norm at this past Blowout and could not understand why anyone would do something that mean to someone who is so nice. Anyhow, you're a good man and good things will come your way.
  15. Mark and Norm thanks for the info appreciate it. Norm, my son really enjoyed talking with you and Bob Long at the Blowout. He said you gave him some pointers he wants to try out and hopefully can break his 3K jinx. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge of the river with him and hope to see on the water. Russ
  16. While driving on the new 355 Toll extension I crossed over two creeks between 127 th St and the about 159 th in the Lemont area. The creeks were Fiddyment Creek and Long Run Creek. I have several questions and they are as follows: (1) are either of these creeks fishable (2) if so what type of fish (3) where are recommended access points.
  17. Rick D, I'd like to second Rob's request. However, I am not too handy. Thanks, Russ S
  18. Yesiree, that's exactly who I meant, the fine looking young man with the fish.
  19. To everyone thanks for the information and tips. Paul, the picture was great. You can see who the real angler is.
  20. Would like to know if anyone has experience (positive/negative) with canoe stabilizers. Also, any recommendation as to brands or materials. Have located several through Cabela's, Spring Creek and Castle Craft. Would like to get a better price than the $200-$300 they advertise.
  21. This is absolutely great for those young men and women whose interest is not geared toward the traditional sports. It's also a wonderful way to promote the outdoors, sportsmanship and conservation. My son, who is in sixth grade, wanted to sign up yesterday when he saw the article in the Chicago Sun Times. In my younger day this would have given a whole new meaning to the term "playing hooky." At the time this would have been a good incentive to "lure" me to school and the the education "bait." (Sorry for thecheap puns) Anyway, good deal.

    Fly Rods

Again, thank you all for the comments and suggestions. It's obvious we'll have to spend a considerable amount time trying the various rods, techniques and all other variables to perfect a new facet to our fishing repertoire. Tough job, but someone's gotta to it.

    Fly Rods

Thanks for the info. I currently own one rod an 8WT two and also a 5 WT two piece. The first one is about 25 years young and never used and the second is about eight years old never used. My 12 year old son has a real interst in giving fly fishing a try and I thought it would be a good thing if I went along with him. From the little I have read, I just wonder if maybe the equipment I own is right as far as rod and reels matching. Looking at some of the new equipment on the market I feel that these items I received as gifts, may not be matched properly and therefore would only frustrate a learner. It is apparent there is a bit to learn with this aspect of fishing, so if anyone could reccomend a couple good books to read I would appreciate it. Would take lessons but this is not in the budget. Thanks again for your help.

    Fly Rods

Is it better to purchase a fly that has only two sections, or is better to purchase one with 3 to 4 sections. Will probably be using a 5 WT and fishing for smallies.
  25. Try Dick's, bought ,y son a pair for @$19.oo and they lasted 2 yrs before he outgrew them. They were chest waders and worked fine. Fleet-Farm is also an option they have good deals.
