Norm M Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 picked 3 smallmouth with worn, ragged tails today. not the earliest I seen this though. caught some females about 15-20 feet away out on the seam off the fast water. if you really need to know got 52 degrees on the water temp in three different places. Paul F Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 How can you tell a male smallie from a female smallie? Quote
Norm M Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 The egg sack was a pretty good indication it was female. the lack of an egg sack on the ones with the worn tails I took to be males. on the fish I caught without those signs I had no clue as to the sex of the fish. sorry should have mentioned the egg sacks. at least I've never seen any indication of trans gender fish on this particular flow. Bterrill Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Norm- Worn tails from recent high water/wedging under stuff or from spawning preparations? Plenty of damaged fins in my neck of the woods, but nothing to indicate spawning, we're still well in the 40's. Been very mild, sunless Spring so far here. Quote
Guest Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 You need the x-ray glasses they sell in the back of comic books. Did catch a few smallies that were ready to bust open. Probably females or just really hungry? Always interesting around here the main river fish start spawning just about now and the drainage ditch fish can sometimes wait till mid July if the water is high. Philf Quote
Norm M Posted April 11, 2011 Author Report Posted April 11, 2011 How do you see / ID an egg sack on a bass? Isn't it internal? X-Ray specs? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4BBQMjbX3c Quote
