opening up the place

Hi boy's, I'm headed up to northern WI to open up our place for the season. We're going to do some fishing and obviously the water temps are going to be cold. Pre- pre spawn. Going to try to get some smallies. What is your favorite early season presentation for this time of year? Last year I got a few on suspended jerk baits & my favorite pre spawn presentation is a wacky rigged finesse worm. Walleye's hit well & we get bonus sturgeon but the smallies are why we go up. billyk

How soon are you going? The fishing season for bass & walleye closed March 6 & doesn't open up until May 1. I'll be up there that weekend, weather permitting. I don't walleye fish but for bass, I look for the warmest water I can find and throw lipless crankbaits, in-line spinners, and senkos.

Last year at the opener the water temps were just about 50 degrees on some lakes and where we did find water that warm we found bunches of largemouth. The smallie lakes that I fish were still about 44 degrees and so we passed on those to concentrate on the green bass that were biting.

going up next week. We'll probably fish for walleye but occasionally a smallie will hit the jig & minnow. The river is open all year for walleye and bass are catch & release til June 23rd. billyk
