Norm M
Scott, Never heard of any smallies in Braidwood. Rob Miller would be the IDNR biologist to ask.
Mike Clifford
There are smallmouth in Braidwood, they are just hard to find. There is an area called the "Narrows" with some current that is supposed to hold them, but I've tried and never found them there. Smallmouth found through IDNR sampling efforts have been incidental. As it stands now, this fishery is on the rebound from major bass kill-offs that happened a couple-few years back. For some reason the vegetation was eradicated (to keep from clogging their intake pipes?), and the entire bass fishery crashed. We used to go out and fish Assassins and other topwater plastics on top of the emergent weeds and enjoy 5-7lb Largemouth exploding out of the grass to take 'em. Those days are long gone. Mike, Braidwood is a good choice for that- judging by the recent panfish reports. LaSalle is another option for multiple species, and Heidecke is no longer online, so it is a natural lake. I'll probably be on B-wood Sunday in a boat, if for no other reason than to learn my lesson one last time about how bad the bass fishery has declined.
