Salt Creek RX: Prescription for a healthy river

Join the Salt Creek Watershed Network for a presentation on the latest research and analysis of the health of the Salt Creek and its tributaries. Jim Huff, a respected expert and consultant in the field of water quality will review the results generated by three years of monitoring and modeling of local waterways and what might be done to resolve the most pressing issues.

The Salt Creek/DuPage River Work Group has been actively monitoring and modeling Salt Creek over the past three years. Activities have focused on dissolved oxygen during low flow periods, salt runoff associated with highway de-icing practices, and fish and macro invertebrate collections. A calibrated low flow dissolved oxygen model on Salt Creek has recently been completed. Options for improving low flow dissolved oxygen levels are currently being developed. The results from these efforts will be presented.

During the continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring program, low dissolved oxygen levels immediately after extreme precipitation events were recorded on Salt Creek, possibly due to the re-suspension of river bottom sediment. The Work Group will be developing additional monitoring programs going forward. There is a potential opportunity for increased citizen participation in the wet weather monitoring, particularly with the sediment levels associated with both the tributaries, storm sewer outfalls, and the main stream. Equipment used by the Sierra Club and Prairie Rivers Network will be described with some examples of where this equipment has been utilized on other streams.
