  1. Like Asherman, I tie a lot more in the winter. I'll only tie to replenish my box when there is open water. I must admit that I used to tie more 15 years ago before I began "wasting" much of my spare time visiting on line fishing sites.
  2. Bterrill is right, computers and video games have had a negative impact on kids not fishing as much. I have been involved in coaching for 25 years and the overall fitness level of players has declined noticeably over the years. Young players seem to know strategy (Madden 2007) but can't run 8-40 yard sprints. I guess I can't blame kids. I find that I am spending more time on-line and less time tying flies every winter. I try to introduce students and players to fishing each year and most of them can't wait to go again. I think if all of us would take young people fishing it would solve more problems than just declining numbers of fishermen.
  3. Kevin, Sorry to see you go. You have been an asset to the ISA as I’m sure you are to any group that you associate with. Don’t let them give you a hard time about being a Yankee and remember it is called the Civil War not the war of northern aggression.
  4. I am leaving for the Eleven Point River in Missouri on Friday for four days. It will be nice to paddle, camp, and cast for Smallies again. It will also be nice to get a jump on some nice spring weather. Last year it was snowing when we left Chicago and we were floating the next day with our shirts off. I can't wait.
  5. Jamie, Great comparison, I know I can't see a zombie without blasting it. I shoot them even if I think it is a nice one with a family.
  6. Rich worked at the original Gander in Wilmot for a number of years. He now lives in Mauston and I believe he guides trout in the driftless area. He ties killer hairbugs, mylar minnows, and his own version of a wooly bugger. The last time I saw him was at the Prarie Portage ranger station in Quetico. He was there with his brother Stuart who publishes the Boundry Water Journal. Rich is a great flyfisher, tyer, and all around nice guy.

    buzz baits

My son Matthew and I got together for our annual trip to Quetico in June. My oldest son David was unable to attend this year. Matt and I fished lakes and rivers north of Crooked and for 8 days, he never took off his 1/8 ounce buzzbait. (actually, he did go through a number of them but always replaced it with another one) I modify my baits by attatching a treble stinger with something tied to it (crystal flash, bucktail, flashabou, ect). I also tie the front attatchment section closed so that we can use snaps without the snap moving back on the bait. Where there were pike (every lake we fished but Argo), we also used a small wire leader made with a Berkely crosslok snap and Tyger wire. He kept track of how many smallmouth he landed on two of the days and each day the count was over 50, with many over 18" and his largest almost 21". I know that he lost as many as he landed but he wouldn't use another bait. I'm pretty sure that other baits would have worked as well for him and might of had a better hookup ratio, but I don't think he would have enjoyed himself more with any other bait. My brother Jim also uses a 1/8 ounce buzzbait in small streams for Smallies. The last two times we went out, that was the only bait HE used. Speaking of Quetico, if anyone is planning a trip there in the future, PM me and I will try to help you with your routing, campsite choices, etc. I have been there almost every year since 1981. My only condition is that you promise to obey all regulations and, although legal, not to kill any Smallies.
